How will Mike Shula change our offense?

He does not get much media coverage or fan coverage for that matter.I did read the thread that we would not be relying on the read option but am very curious as to his philosophy for the team going forward given the skill set we have.

Just after the original post I did find this in the Charlotte Observer.

 http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/01/22/3805575/panthers-offensive-coordinator.html

MOBILE, Ala. A day after Alabama coach Nick Saban made a royal entrance at a Senior Bowl practice in a luxury SUV, his predecessor sat in relative obscurity Tuesday in the end zone bleachers at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Mike Shula, wearing a Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville cap and black Oakleys, said fans still recognize him in the state where he played quarterback for Alabama and coached the Crimson Tide from 2003-06.

“A little bit,” Shula said. “Maybe not quite as much anymore.”

The Panthers’ new offensive coordinator will no longer be able to keep a low profile in the Carolinas.

In the past Shula was overly conservative, unable to develop winning strategies, and unable to make any in game adjustments whatsoever.

We can only hope that over the past few years he has improved a great deal in these areas through working for Chud.

He isn't changing it.

What we should hope he changes is the situational stuff Chud sucked at. For example, get Cam on the 3 yard line at first and goal.....you don't call 3 pass plays.

Offense isn't changing. 4 games out of 32 where Chud went read option gets too much focus and talk around here

Dungy told him to run an ultra conservative O with his weak talent.

He has Cam now....all these lame coaches inheriting these athletic QBs are now being called offensive gurus. Talent driven league. Give the best OC in the NFL Jimmy Clausen and he won't appear to have the ability to coach himself out of a wet paper bag

Good point.Developing a scheme or a player is different than managing a game ie.that in a part was Rivera's weakness.

Incorrect. How many of those games did you watch again? Not one?

perhaps you can tell me about Dungy pre-Manning then. Bc it sounds like you believe something that contradicts everything else known about him....

Or are you arguing he didn't have weak talent?

Not being a smart ass either

Shula had Warrick Dunn (1st rounder, pro bowler) Mike Alstott (pro bowler) Trent Dilfer (1st rounder, pro bowler), stout offensive line, WR Reidel Anthony (1st rounder) AND a Defense that gave them the ball back after numerous 3 and outs. Tampa Bay invested plenty in offensive talent.

Was it a lack of talent or an inability to utilize and develop the talent given? As someone that watched every single game it is my opinion it is the latter.

But go ahead and dig up some old stats because those tell you the whole story, right?

I think the offense will be be similar to what it has been (they claim to have kept Shula for the young quarterback's continuity) but with a bit more of the generic I formation runs that we saw closer to the end. If the offensive line is healthy, I imagine it will create a more stable offense, but we will probably be trading some big plays for that. I basically trust the offense to remain in the top half of the league with the cast we have. I'm more worried about how the defense comes together this season.

He had rushers....he ran them. Heck, he almost pulled off the 2 1000 yard rusher feat with a RB and FB.

Anthoney? He lasted one year after Shula left. Career over.

Tampa wasn't a losing ball club....so how were the gameplans not efficient based on what they wanted to do with that D?

I still fail to understand the plenty of offensive talent angle. Dilfer and a bust WR?

You are arguing that planning on scoring 10 points a game was done on purpose.

    • Evero has his faults, but even in that loss, the team only gave up 20 points. Your post gets to the heart of the matter. We are not a talented team on defense at this time. Some of our younger guys may develop w/more playing time, but for now we have no impact players at LB or EDGE. We could really use a ball-hawking S on the back end as well. We have exactly two players that have to be accounted for on every play, D. Brown, and J.Horn. Mike Jackson has been solid. The other starters would probably be backups on most the upper echelon NFL teams. We really can't expect this team to a Top 10 defense with such a lack of talent. All things considered I've been somewhat impressed with how much better they have played this year.   https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-points-per-game   https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-average-team-passer-rating We are in the top 15 in terms of points allowed per game (22.6) and top 12 in defensive passer rating (88.9). And, we are doing this without a formidable PASS RUSH. Even our rushing defense has improved. We are #16 in rushing yards allowed per game (116) compared to 179 per game last season. https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-rushing-yards-per-game I wouldn't cry if Evero moved on after the season, but his defense isn't the biggest worry for our team.
    • The funny part is she looks older and not in a good way...
    • How about some line help, both sides, first. Trade XL before talking about a 1st round WR 3 years in a row. Or a TE or...drum roll...a QB to pair with a vet.  And if it's not a speedy route guy with hands then just hard pass.
