Eric Breitenstein Background

First impression: Breitenstein is compact at 5-10 and 230 pounds, wears a beard, and never stops smiling.

At Wofford, he gave fans a reason to smile. Working out of the triple option, Breitenstein ran for a school record 5,730 yards. He rushed for a Southern Conference record 321 yards in one game. He ran for 2,035 yards as a senior. He was the conference’s offensive player of the year as a junior and as a senior.

Last season South Carolina beat Wofford 26-7. The Gamecocks had a big-time defense. Breitenstein was big-time, rushing for 126 yards and a touchdown and averaging 4.5 yards a carry.

He was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, the Football Championship Subdivision’s Heisman Trophy.

Rivera on Breitenstein

“He looks like an everyday kind of guy,” says Carolina coach Ron Rivera, who smiles when I ask about Breitenstein, who played at Watauga High. “But, man, he’s got some sneaky ability and it showed because he had a great career at Wofford. What his role can be will be interesting because he ran the ball there very well. He’s shown very well out of the backfield (at rookie camp) in terms of catching the ball so he’s flashed, he’s caught our attention.”

I remember standing next him in line at the Blimpie in Boone back when I was in college. He was big then, and looks bigger now. He was a Sr in HS at the time. Hated when we had to play against him, but I hope he can succeed with the Panthers

Any info you got him as a blocker? Thanks in advance.

He didn't do much blocking, if any, at Wofford. He was their "Fullback" but that just means he was the dive man in the Triple Option and he either got the handoff or ran straight into the line without

Interesting, hopefully he can develop into a good blocker; that would give him a much better chance of making the squad.

    • This guy pre-draft was saying he could take or leave football, and he seems to have been playing with that mentality ever since lol.
    • Agreed, another safety would be nice. Bud Clark, TCU, is one I would like to see us take a flyer on later in the draft, if he stays healthy and we don't take someone earlier. I just really hope we draft a solid C this year. Tired of seeing us cycle through average to below average players in that area.
    • Bryce doesn't like throwing into the middle of the field unless the play broke down or it's set up to give him a passing lane.  So because of this issue, most of the passing offense has to be outside the numbers towards the boundary. So you see him throw a lot of dump offs, swing routes, short side out routes, comebacks or deep balls outside the numbers using the boundary as protection of an interception.    Pretty easy for a NFL defense to see this and scheme against it.  All you have to do is run a shell cover 2 deep dime, LB plays a hook underneath, take the flat away with a blitz/flat zone option for the two inside DB's, outside two DB's play hook zone underneath and carry anything deep.    Pretty much what NO ran to take away Rico while also limiting What Bryce can do as well.
