NFL's Most Indispensable Defensive Players

For once Adam Schein gave the Panthers some love...

In compiling this Schein Nine on the most indispensable defensive players, I took into account pure domination, impact on the team, the overall defensive unit and the standings.

8) Luke Kuechly, LB, Carolina Panthers: I think this cat is a star. I thought he was the best defensive player in the 2012 NFL Draft and voted for him as Defensive Rookie of the Year (an honor he ran away with). The former Boston College icon became the rock of the Panthers defense.

Kuechly is not only a true tackler, he's an indispensable leader. He is on my short list of players I would build by defense around.

Complete List

1. Geno Atkins

2. Brian Cushing

3. Von Miller

4. Justin Smith

5. Richard Sherman

6. Jason Pierre-Paul

7. Vince Wilfork

8. Luke Kuechly

9. Daryl Washington

Just Missed The Cut

Haloti Ngata

Cameron Wake

Jared Allen

DeMarcus Ware

NaVorro Bowman

Ndamukong Suh

Clay Matthews

Sean Weatherspoon

Darrelle Revis

Schein is saying the Kuechly is a true tackler, he just phrased it incorrectly. If you use "not only" is should usually be followed by "but also".

Ahhh.. For some reason my eyes didn't pick up the "only" in front of not hahaha.... I guess I'm just expecting bad things since the last Schein article (shrugs)

Yeah, I have no clue how J.J. Watt wasn't included... that was one of the first things I noticed.  He's without a doubt one of the most dominant defensive forces in the league right now, and just put together like the best season by a defensive player in NFL history.

Excellent list. Geno Atkins was a tremendous steal in the 4th round.

Excellent list? Surely you jest.

Cameron Wake is Miami's entire pass rush. JJ Watt had an all time great season. McCoy is critical to TB's defense.

Only Atkins, Miller, JPP and Wilfork are sure locks in this type of list.

    • Apparently, it's hip surgery for Pyotr... Thank God he's pretty young bc that is gonna be one hell of a rehab. Hopefully, Bussi can keep his throne warm for him until he's ready for his triumphant return.
    • The Urban and Reich seasons were epic NFL failures for completely different reasons while also linking these 2 QBs. Wasn't Reich fired earlier in the season by a game or something?  Trevor's bust to Youngs bust is interesting and obviously I would take the former 10 out of 10 times. Still, Trevor has only had 1 game over .500 in a season until this year when playing. What I am saying is that that HC is winning with what he has, which isn't perfect, and in a place that scrapping 9 games together is not a given...usually with help from  another QB along the way. And that's in the AFC South. And the Jags are actually paying their QB vs us hopefully dodging a horrendous 5th option. So that's a lot tougher than what it cost to field Young this year or next. I wasn't really trying to prop up Lawrence but Coen. Dude is doing good work and it showed when Carolina played them. The difference between him and DC is like Lawrence and Young at the minimum IMO.
