Matt Stafford: 27.5 million signing bonus

Do you think Newton's agent can just name his price and Gettleman will pay it without any negotiation?

You know that I never said that. There will be lengthy negotiations, like any contract. I simply disagree with your idea that they will be so far apart that Gettleman will simply throw his hands up and let our quarterback walk.

It's absurd to even fathom in the modern NFL. The goal is to win games. First piece to that is a franchise QB.

I'm not worried about Luke, that's far off. As for Hardy, that's a concern. I think he'll want a serious payday.

Do me a favor. Quote the post where I said "they will be so far apart that Gettleman will simply throw his hands up and let our quarterback walk."

Stafford came a few yards short of throwing for 5000+ yards the last 2 seasons, Detriot really isn't going to find anyone better than that.

That's easy to do when half the field is uncovered with all the attention on Calvin Johnson who still bring down 2000 of those 5000 yards.

First. Let me say that Mathew is a stud. And he hasn't missed a game in the last two years. He is worth the money. It just surprises me it was only 3 years. Most folks were thinking 5 years. It is just nice to finally have this done.

Second. Cam is going to get his. The only question is how much?

Another thing to look at is that the Panthers have more players to sign. Detroit just restructured Suh, and that is about it for those pesky big contracts. We have to worry about Kraken, Keek, along with Cam. We have a tougher road to hoe with those big deals.

Don't doubt that at all.

But how certain are you that Newton's agent's idea of 'substantial' will match up with Gettleman's?(ditto other popular players)

There may not be that much difference when the time comes, but if there is, how will fans take to the idea of letting a popular player walk because he's asking for too much?

Worth remembering that the Giants have done that more than once.

I'm not sure how you expect people to interpret statements like those above any other way.

None of those contracts are in the same year. Kraken is in 2014, Newton is 2015 or 2016 if we exercise the 5th year option and Kuechly is in 2016. Also remember that current negotiations are squeezed by a flat cap which is expected to go up substantially when the TV contract money is factored in in 2015.

By 2015 we will have worked through the big dead money Hurney contracts to Beason, Williams and Stewart among others.Plus remember that even those huge contracts expected by newton, Kuechly, and Hardy will be cap friendly in year 1 and 2 making the big money due in year 3.

There is little to worry about for the next few years..

As a question of "what if this happens". Not a statement of "this will happen". There's a pretty clear difference.

The question was "Will people still support Gettleman if he plays hardball with popular players?"

Interpreting that as "OMG he thinks we're not re-signing Cam" is a bit of a stretch.

Backpedal much? Hey it's what you typed. No point in arguing about semantics.

Anyway, we obviously aren't going to agree regardless. So it's all good.

They may not all come due in the same year. But there will be one coming due every year. They will add up quickly. Just like Beast, Stew, CJ, DWill, and Gross all came due, we will have to perpetuate these deals. Kraken, then Cam, then Keek, then Star, then CJ again, then this guy, then that guy. There is always, hopefully, some guy, or guys, needing a deal done.

Which is why you have to draft well. You have to have replacements for guys who need those pesky big deals. Some of those deals you can live with, but now days you just cannot afford too many of those type deals. You are going to lose some guys. If you draft well, those losses don't hurt as much.

Talented guys on their rookie deals, with a few strategic FA, make it feasible to hand out a few big deals. But you can only have so many of those whoppers. Which is why I said we are in a more dire straights because we have more talented players than the Lions. Gettlemen is going to have his hands full.

When you are talking about this many deals. It won't make a difference if you front load them. They are still going to add up. They are still going to come due.

I love having all these talented players. Paying them all is the tough part.

I like the way some folks on here are quoting Matt's record but when it comes to Cam, oh wins are a team game. Truth is, Matt's a baller and Detroit can probably not find any better. As the saying goes, a bird in hand... (may poo in the palm)

I judge QBs by what I see. Stats and records can be deceiving.

What I see in Stafford is a guy whose ceiling is 'good' and who has the benefit of a superior receiver.

I don't think he'll ever be elite.

Then I don't think you have seen enough. Sorry to say that. But Mathew is everything you want your Franchise QB to be. He is the first to show up, and the last to leave. He has become a vocal leader, and he is the man in Detroit.

He has passed for almost 10,000 yards the last two seasons. Megatron only has 3800 of those yards. So evidently there are other guys doing good work as well.

I will admit that if the Lions had an actual running game those passing yards would diminish. But that does not take away from what he has accomplished the last few years.

He is absolutely a stud. He is one of the best young QBs out there. That screams elite to me. And I can live with that.

I have waited damm near a lifetime for the Lions to get a Franchise QB. And I am tickled pink to have Mathew.
