Cut Hangartner, Keep Clausen?

The two situations really don't have anything to do with one another. If we are to keep three QBs, if JC shows progress during this preseason, why wouldn't we keep him?

Showed the Giants didn't care much if their backup QB could actually play....

Clausen isn't here b/c he can step in and play in this offense either. He doesn't fit a vertical pass offense....nor has he ever shown anything that resembles real NFL QB play

Well, why is he here then? 

 

Rivera and Chico believe in competition. They also shoot straight from the hip.  I doubt they have Clausen here just to take up a roster spot. I believe they want to see what the kid can or can't do, then make their determination as to his future as a Panther from there.  Jimmy will either play himself into one more year, or play himself out of a job depending on what happens in the next month.

 

 

 

TBH, to me this thread seems like a kind of back-handed crap on Clausen thread...out of the blue...from nowhere. Like: let me get a Clausen jibe in. People have done AE the same way in this place. I am tired of those, especially this time of year.  Let's see how it all plays out, and if Clausen doesn't survive, so be it. But, if he does, then great.  I feel a little uncomfortable going into the season with only two QBs, esp. with a suspect line.

So you think Carr is in NY bc they believe he is the best option if Eli went down? I don't...I think he is the best option with a healthy Eli.

Jimmy probably brings a good vibe to the QB room, meshes well with Cam, and has good input.

Well, all I can say is that I wouldn't keep anyone on the roster that I feel couldn't actually get on the field and keep the ship, at least, afloat if that is what's called for. This is particularly true at the QB position. There is too much time, money and resources at stake to keep a glorified cheerleader on the roster when you don't really have to.  That's just my opinion.  I mean Jimmy's a good lookin' kid, but he ain't that damn good lookin'.

Not really. But look at it this way- by cutting a veteran O-line player who has the proven versatility of having played virually every position on the O-line, you're telling me Clausen right now is a better backup QB than Hangartner is a starting O-lineman.

 

I think they did it because they can shove Clausen in a corner and he's one less player to worry about coaching up. That being said, the "guaranteed" salary Clausen has for 2013 is $630k.

I can see your lose connection, but I still say QB is a totally different animal. Moreover, I did not agree with whacking Hangman, particularly at this point in the process (unless you knew that he was ultimately a glorified camp body and were doing him some kind of "favor" by cutting him early so he could find work elsewhere).  So, in that we agree.  But, as for Clausen, I still say he is going to be given his pound of flesh to either survive on or choke on. 

 

Coincidentally, Zod has basically said Clausen has sucked during camp, in so many words, while James Dator has said he has looked very good.  I say, give him until at least the second preseason game to find out what's the real deal.

Clausen is in his last year at Carolina.  I don't know why he's around, other than he's cheap and he's owed guaranteed money.  However, it's likely that he is decent in the film room, and runs the scout team well.

 

And this may indeed be intended as a poop on Pickles thread, but that doesn't mean he can't play.  People forget he was a rookie on an injury riddled team that had a lame duck coaching staff and an offensive coordinator who made Joe Pendry look like Don Coryell.  If guys like Brady Quinn can get a shot starting somewhere, you can bet that Clausen will try to, and he knows that there won't be an opportunity in Carolina for as long as Cam is here.

 

So basically, we're already paying for him, and he obviously adds value that isn't readily apparent to your average fan.  Why else would we really keep him?

      I don't think it was fear of the unknown because he tried to hide the extent of the injuries that made him drop. After the drop, the reports I heard were that teams knew what was wrong with his knee and it was something similar to another athlete from a few years ago (honestly don't remember if it was even a football player).  That it was basically one of those things where he should be fine for a while, there isn't a huge concern of immediate injury risk.   But what he has going on with his knee is something that is degenerative and there's little chance he'll be able to play more than 5 or so years on it before he won't be able to play anymore. So basically it was teams knowing if they draft him, he's probably going to be only a rookie contract player and even if he's great, you might not be able to get use out of him on a second contract.  Which in turn makes the drop make sense, but I'm kinda surprised some contending team didn't take him late in the 1st, hoping he'd put them over the top on a SB run but then not even have to worry about giving him a big contract in 4 years too.

      Depends if they see the writing on the wall with their roster and contracts and decide to bite the bullet and begin a complete rebuild and roster overhaul.  I have no clue why some franchises (IE us) refuse to do this and keep half assing trying to win 8 games or so.  Do it correctly, take your lumps and build a contender.  We shall see what loomis decides.

      Each team plays 17 games.  I do not see why they don't just have each team play one international game per year.  Neutral site game, 8 home, 8 away.
