If we go 9-7 and miss the playoffs, Rivera should NOT be fired.

If Cam is in fact the face of the franchise and Richardson needs to sell him on staying when his rookie contract is up, I expect him to have a big impact on whether Rivera stays or goes (if goals aren't being met).

Also, am I the only one bothered by players talking about how "laid back" Rivera is this year? He should be anything but at this point. Look at the Harbaugh brothers who were just in the superbowl. Are they laid back?

The two previous seasons Rivera has been super serious and emotionless. We started off both seasons 2-8. He started to look more happy and relaxed the last stretch of the 2012 season and throughout the offseason. I think him being more relaxed/laid back with let him take more risks then before and overall better play calling because his head is clear. That's just my opinion though

Frankly, if everyone thinks that Gettleman really is the right GM for the franchise, then he should be able to make whatever decision he wants on Rivera, whether we win 5 or 15.

I think Rivera will end up being dang good coach....he is growing though.

Not exactly...

The head coach does not call the plays, the coach isn't in charge of positional meetings, and the head coach isn't the one out there on the field trying to make plays.

The head coaches primary job is to game plan. DeAngelo Williams said something recently that really convinced me that Chudzinski was the problem. Williams said that the team game planned to run the ball during the week but when they got to the games they completely ignored the game plan. It seems like Chud had his own idea on game day and tended to ignore the game plan that Rivera had set up. I think Shula and Rivera will be a much better match.

Rivera has intensity he just shows it in a different way, you can look at him and see that he wants to succeed. If you're looking for a coach that gets in players faces or try's to fire up his team by jumping around, you might want to switch teams.

Rivera will always be a mellow guy but you can tell by looking at him on game day that he has a passion to succeed.

Also let's be real, if you're smart you knew Rivera was going to make mistakes in his first two years. Did you really expect that a head coach with no experience was going to come in a take us to the Super Bowl in two years?

So why didn't Ron Rivera, "Check The Chudzinski Ass", and read him the riot act, or fire him/let him go?

Why did it take Hurney being fired, and Chud leaving him hi and dry (and scooping up Norv Turner in the process), for things to change and Chud to go?

I'm sorry. That's on Rivera. He needs to grow some balls, backbone, and a feel for his team/coaches.

Hopefully (especially with Gettleman there), he has for 2013. And I wish him and the team luck.

I sure hope he does, although I don't share your optimism.

He is a great defensive coach and X and O guy....all he needs is a healthy S without comical holes and I believe any D under him will dominate.

He is learning some big picture stuff...at least he can admit it

I have more faith in Ron becoming a good HC....than I do if Gettlemen is allowed to blow it all up. I hope they don't fire Ron if gets 9 wins and misses the playoffs.

So you don't think that they are some better NFL, former NFL, and college coaches that aren't (or shown to be) better than Ron Rivera??

I know you're a fan, and feel he may be a great coach one day. Maybe (especially with Gettleman, working with him, and looking over his back)? However, based off of what we seen, I would agree with a recent writer, who said that 'they're were almost 30 better NFL coaches in the NFL than what Rivera has demonstrated so far".  I agree.

Just cause you're a good position coach, doesn't mean you'll be a great head coach. That's what usually separates the former from the later. It's the 'Big Picture' stuff, dealing with the GM, and managing your coaches and the game, as Head Coach. Not everybody can do that, or make the transition.

- Rivera can't fire anyone without the GM's and owners permission.

- Coordinators and position coaches never get fired in season, especially when that particular season is already over due to a 1-6 start (or whatever it was).

- Who said that Rivera didn't read Chud the riot act? None of us will ever know.

- Like I've said before, there's only so much you can do in-season if a coordinator and and coach disagree... see Rob Ryan and Jason Garrett. Ryan ignored Garrett's message to simplify the defense but he remained on the staff until the end of the year.

All I can say is that Rivera needs/ed to surround himself with better people/coaches and he did that this offseason.

Also I'm not saying that this happened, it's just speculation on my part based off of various comments from Williams and Tolbert.

You know, coaches DO fire position coaches in the middle of the season, no matter how much posters here think they don't. Just look at Cam Cameron last year, and that was a successful team.

Just thought I would share that...

They were in position to win the Super Bowl and they did...

You just further proved my point why Chud wasn't fired in-season... the season was already over as far as the playoffs went.

On top of that, that will disrupt any progress Cam had...

Firing your OC, promoting your QB coach, and hiring a totally different QB coach in-season isn't exactly a great idea when you have a young quarterback.
