If we go 9-7 and miss the playoffs, Rivera should NOT be fired.

I wonder how many of the Patriots losses in Belichik's first year there, or his losses when he was on the Browns were attributed to poor coaching decisions. I don't think I've ever heard that said about him.

But yeah, Rivera is in his class, if we just give him a(nother) chance to show it.

After his first 2 yrs in Clev....he wasn't highly praised as a NFL HC. He was definitely in the Rivera area.

Here is a piece from that era...his coaching was definitely questioned. He was bashed for stubbornly sticking with conservative stuff that wasnt working and a bunch of stuff.

You are letting who BB became influence what he was 2 years in

So if you have guys who shouldn't be starting in the secondary, why wouldn't you let one of your FOUR great options at short yardage go for it on fourth down instead of putting your team in a position where they're depending on these non-starting quality players?

Why would you play prevent over and over when it isn't working? There are more examples where coaching failed us far more than any single player. And somehow, when it's undeniable that it IS coaching, then it's the coordinator's fault.

The buck stops nowhere, apparently.

He admitted he made a mistake there and even said recently that he would have gone for it...

But let's ignore the fact that Cam fumbled the ball on what would have been a first down on the third down play, or the fact that if we wouldn't have converted on fourth down that people would have criticized him for going for it.

It's impossible to win with people that only want to see someone fail or only look at the negatives...

I guess you blame Cam's interception in Chicago and McDermott's poor play calling on Rivera.. Do you blame Cam's poor throw to Hartsock against Seattle on Rivera as well?

The point is that the team struggled last year, not just Rivera, but the team.

So...exactly what Ron did with the new OC position? Why couldn't he have fired Chud in the middle of the season and promoted Shula to OC then? It's pretty common for mid-season fires to be replaced by "interim" coaching positions to not hinder the development and progression of the team. And then in the offseason they can evaluate potential permanent hires to come in and implement their new system over the offseason.

You also failed to mention that he would have had to promote Dorsey to QB coach and then find a new scout to replace Dorsey... That's just too much to go through.

What evidence lol?

Quit acting like you know what did or didn't happen. Reporters aren't allowed in on meetings and I can guarantee you (speaking from experience) that you never talk to reporters about meetings, especially meetings about someone losing their job. How do you know he was prompted to talk to Chud? Is this more of your speculation.

Please quote Rivera when he said that he was in on the changes that Chud made.. because currently you aren't bringing a lot of facts to the table...

You obviously can't read, re-collect and comprehend.

Nuff said.

To me, 9-7 or 8-8 (or almost any win-loss record) being the only metric taken into account is really short sighted.  The head coach is only one of myriad influences on a team's regular season record.

If they go 9-7, but lost 3 games making busted up calls in the last 15 minutes, he should be let go.  If he goes 7-9 after some series of catastrophies (injuries, arrests, etc.) then he should perhaps stay.

All I ask for, ultimately, is improvement.  Last year we saw essentially the same nonsense we saw in 2011; 3rd and 4th quarter lead losses that ended in defeat especially.  That's what has to stop in my mind.  And if it does, the record will improve.  But the record is a symptom, not the cause of the proverbial illness.

What the hell is the Head Coach supposed to do then, anyway?  If they have no impact on the success of a team, we should just dump Rivera and use the money we spend on him to hire better coordinators and position coaches.

I'm not even saying we should fire him.  I just think that he's a mediocre coach, but I'm still really pulling for the Panthers and I really hope that he has a great year.  Still, it's silly to think that you can judge him on his performance to date and put him in the same class as the all-time greats.  I'm sure people can look for potential and find it, but you can do that with nearly anything.  In sum, his performance has been lacking to date.

Here's to the future though, may it be filled with success for all :)

Then it's settled. Rivera IS just like Belichick. Now all he has to do is go someplace else so he can start winning. :D

Could happen....especially if he has a 9-7 type year and misses the playoffs. And JR and DG simply want to get away from a Hurney guy neither was ever high on

I can read perfectly, that's any you are resorting to personal attacks because you have nothing else to say.

No. Not at all. It's exactly what I said.

You obviously want to believe/see what you want (and how you want), despite what's presented. So I'm not going to waste my time trying to discuss it otherwise. And that's fine/no biggie.

I've been very clear in what I've said, and you choose to selective  (if you read and understood everything at all), while being circular in your discussion.   It its what it is.

Weren't you the guy, that totally misread/misunderstood my response to one of your post, that you [sheepishly] admitted later,  you only had read the first line of my [multi paragraph] response to you.

If so (and it's you); it figures, there's precedent to ignore If it's not you; oh well, I apologize in advance. Lol

There primary job is to game plan and it's clear that either Rivera and Chud didn't see eye to eye or that Rivera's game plans didn't work... Either way, not expecting hardships from a coach that was in his first two years as an NFL head coach is ludicrous.

I'm also not convinced that he is a good coach, but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt because at times he has shown that he can be a solid coach.

    • Right...I think they've done really well. No one's going to bat 1000% but they've addressed areas of need and there's no comparison to the overall talent of the team now than when DC and then Morgan got the reigns. This whole season is about seeing how much of a step up can Bryce and this team make. If Bryce can't and last year is as good as it gets for him then at least we have a talented roster for the next guy. I think we're going to be good this season
    • I said could, not would. I recognize he has potential based on past performance. Compared to what KP has done, Howell has more potential and the physical traits to make noise. KP has small hands and a weak arm. Not something you want in even your backup QB.  I've been hammering since last off-season before we re-signed Dalton, improve the room. Other than getting younger, I don't see how anyone can say we legitimately improved the room or even tried. We might as well have signed Josh Rosen.  Dalton is still on the roster for now. That's 3 QBs unless we trade or cut him. He's still Bryce's mentor after all. Do you believe we are going to draft someone with potential and give them a legitimate opportunity to develop from the practice squad? Are we going to carry 3 QBs on the active roster? 4 for a developmental rookie? Are we going to potentially cut KP if we draft a rookie and he's outperformed? Doubtful. Cutting Dalton(if we can't trade him) and KP would be 8m in wasted cap space.  I chose Howell as an example because he showed promise in his only full season as a starter. You could plug in another name with the physical traits and potential and what i said would still apply. KP showed almost nothing and was benched. I genuinely don't care if it’s rookie pick as long as there is the potential to develop into a future NFL QB.  As much as I can't stand him, Bellichek was always developing a number 2 QB even with the GOAT as his starter. The wisdom of that was evident when Cassell came in when Brady was hurt week 1 and went 11-5 and almost made the wildcard, which 11-5 gets you almost any other year. I give credit where it's due though. Cassel and Jimmy G both came into the league as developmental QBs, potential QB1s, and went on to have careers.  You never know if you never try. KP feels like a punt in addressing the most important position on the field. Bryce has never played 2 full games of franchise QB level football back to back.  If Bryce progresses, are you ready to offer a 280m 5 year extension based off a one hit wonder year? If Bryce regresses and we need a QB in 27, are we going to trade a fortune away again to trade up to 1 to get one? Are you ready to do the past 3 years all over again?  To me, it's not about Kenny Pickett. It's about the move itself. It was a feeble attempt to improve the QB room. We better hope Bryce succeeds, because if he doesn't, we literally have no backup plan right now.
    • IOL that early isn’t good value at all. We have a LT who might not ever be good again and a RT that might retire soon. T seems deep early in this draft, so I’d go there in the 1st.
