OK, it's a little early but I'm not so sure we need Hixon. And, how 'bout Gettis?

Pat Y continually mentions (even tonight) about Gettis having an uphill battle, which means his people in the Panthers org have told him that and that leads credence to him not being a Rivera guy.

For what it's worth, the coaching staff gave him a lot of opportunity tonight and he capitalized on it. I'm rooting for him.

I have to agree....without value to special teams. I think the bottom 3 wrs will need to bring something to special teams.

Having said that I am pulling for him.

fast paced offense requires LOTS of playmakers starting with two TE's that can catch.  They will rotate in.

They all have work to do.  Smitty got a ball jarred loose that would have been a first could have been a critical first.  The Ginn issues look to have been as much or probably more DA's fault.  That guy made the "I don't understand!  I'm usually GREAT at cornhole" face after each and every poor play.  Not impressed with him at all.

We will likely keep 4 down to Ginn for sure and at least one more spot, a toss up between Hixon and Gettis if it were to be decided right now.  Fortunately we get to watch them all again in the city of brotherly battery slingers next Thursday and revisit this again after that.

LOL @ everyone putting AE #3 ahead of Hixon.

All I know is that AE was literally looking like a play-making receiver on the field last night, and Hixon was on the bench.  Moreover, though some may disagree, we pretty much know Hixon's upside, but do we really know AE's? It is easily arguable that AE is the better pure athlete, and the display he put on last night was nothing to laugh at...at least, D. Hixon probably wasn't laughing.

Yeah, not many people seem to be talking about that.  I think it's arguable that Clausen looked better than DA last night.  In any event, DA needs to step it up.

To me there is no argument.  Clausen was head and shoulders better.

This sport is really unique.  The irony sometimes is pure comedy.  I wanted DA to come in and dethrone Jake like some kind of rabid caged animal at one point.  I cursed and stomped and screamed in this forum about nothing but that for weeks when DA looked like he might be available.  I remember KNOWING that DA was our future.  LMAO about that even as I type it now.  Watching him last night was very disappointing.  Sure time has passed and maybe the timing was just off last night but he looked really, really bad.

I find it startling how much a players' philosophy and instincts impact their game. DA has the tools.

Long time reader here! Finally posting after an extended period of laziness.

I wanted to touch on Gettis quickly.

I have always wanted to see great things from him for two reasons.

  1. He did show a ton of promise his rookie year which we all know of.
  2. No matter if they are a star player or a 4th string corner, I am always rooting for players to recover from major injury, particularly something like a knee injury. I hate to see someone's career end due to a situation like that.

All that being said, I really liked what I saw from him last night and I am proud that he made plays during his first real action since the injury.

In regards to the body catches, they were routes that were over the middle, and I am sure we have some former receivers in the building here; when catching in traffic, it is very important to protect your core as much as possible from the big hit, and the way he caught the ball did that.

I will say this: How many times has Steve Smith made a body catch over the middle? The answer is...the majority. It is just the smart thing to do.

To me it seemed like the majority of Gettis's routes ended up being toward the middle, which were probably by design to test out his toughness and to get his game legs back under him. I want to see different routes from him in the next game.

Overall, Gettis played like the number 4 out there, and I would like to see him get a few drives in with Cam at some point in the preseason which I think we will.

On a side note, I do not get the excitement on Hixon. I was not excited when we signed him, and the longer he is injured the closer he is to getting waived. Gettleman seems like a no BS kind of guy, and I hope he chooses best player available over loyalty. We shall see.

Thanks for reading guys.

Nice first post. I am glad that it comes on the heels of a good game by Gettis, and in this thread.

in Gettis defense, those where the proper catches considering he had to protect himself from the hits he was going to take going across the middle. the playmaker Irvin on numerous times have said you should use this type of catch, when you know you are about to be hit.

Great point.

I remember seeing that special on NFL Network with Michael Irvin working with the '12 draftee's going over the proper way of catching the ball in traffic.

He made the point that everyone saying you should always catch the ball with your hands didnt make a living catching the ball over the middle in traffic with a LB bearing down on them.

That was a awesome segment.

The problem with Gettis' body catching is that it was a problem for him coming out of college, and apparently, he still hasn't corrected it.  He has never shown the ability to consistently catch with his hands.  This, along with questions about his toughness, is the biggest issue he must overcome if he ever wants to be anything more than a bubble guy.
