Anybody realize that AE is a FA after this season?

Donald LaFell

All the WR who may be getting playing time this year are FA next year. I think that's what DG wanted.

But Serious question

How much can Lafell, AE, Gettis or any of them not name Smitty really ask for and get in the open Market???

It's not like any of them have a history of consistent production on their resume.

We have had AE for 2 years and all we have out of him is a serviceable preseason game. Let's start talking contracts after week 6. Happy to pay him if he is really coming around. As koolkatluke says, what is AE going to demand in the open market with his resume thus far?

Some might get less then what they got on their rookie contract.

AE was a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick. He might not see the money he got on his 1st deal.

It's not like Hurney is still here. LoLOL

AE has 5 catches in his career let's give him Harvin Money.

Dear god, I don't even want to fathom that.

Honestly AE is my last concern. We can't let Lafell walk, I just hope Gettleman doesn't go too cheap at him.

Outside of App St homers, absolutely nobody would pay AE more than a bag of stale potato chips to play in the NFL. His "breakout season" is gonna be no more than 20rec 200yd 2td. He will be a 26yo, 5'11 180lb, 4-year vet WR who has averaged 1/2 reception per game. He won't generate any interest outside of Carolina. He will either be resigned on a 1-yr vet minumum deal and fight for a roster spot, or just given a plane ticket to Canada and the CFL.

I'm a Lafell fan but his resume says he should get paid like a 3rd WR. I wouldn't pay to much for any of these guys until they can prove more. Maybe 1 year deals for everybody.

maybe he should do something before people worry about that.

5 career catches and 2 catches in preseason.

Still, yeah. WR outside of Smith, and DB likely to make the roster outside of Godfrey and Norman, are all free agents.  I don't think that's accidental.  Some guys will prove valuable and might stay.  But even then, it's partially hedging bets on whether Rivera, and therefore schemes we're running, are even there.

we have said this very thing hence some of us wanting a WR early in the draft. how much is any of these guys production this year can be contributed to them being in a contract year? also, are you willing to pay Lafell money like Mike Williams or Brain Hartline?

    • I guess so. Don't think I was involved with previous discussions.  Tepper is one of the newest owners in the NFL. Dan is going into his 3rd season as a GM - ever. Dave is going into his 3rd season as a HC - ever. Before becoming a HC, he was an OC/playcaller for one season total. Idzik is about to go into his 1st year as a play caller - ever. WRs are rookies, sophomores and 3rd year guys - though the experienced 3rd year guys are XL and Coker (who has missed a ton of games). TEs are guys going into their 2nd and 3rd seasons, and Tommy Tremble - though Sanders has missed a ton of games. QB has played 3 years. Chuba is an experienced RB, but Brooks and Etienne have taken very little snaps at the position. O-line is more experienced vets with some talent - which is HUGE. Need them to stay healthy. I mean the offense is very young in every aspect except O-line. You see it differently?
    • I said this ALL last season and will say it again this year. Our record means diddly squat this year, I don't care if we have 0 wins or 17 wins, I only care about one thing and one thing only. Bryce proves without a shadow of a doubt that he IS or ISN'T our long term solution at QB. It's the only thing that matters for the same reason it sucks that this is the same thing as last year.  This needs to be determined, and if they can't determine it, then it's still telling the team the answer, just not the one they want to hear. As right now we're in the ultimate QB purgatory, a position that dooms franchises for years.  Just look at a team like the Cardinals, who extended a better QB and it still screwed them over and haven't had a contending team in a long time. People get too caught up on wins and losses when evaluating players, particularly QBs.  When people look at the final record and use that as a reason to want to extend a QB or not is just a fools errand.  If we had lost 2-3 more games last year because we didn't make a last second FG, I genuinely wonder if we would have just moved on from Bryce this offseason (like we should have been doing anyways IMHO).
