A lot of what is passed off as country today is pop with a little twang thrown in. That's why when an artist burns out in country they see success in pop, and vise versa.

Taylor's last singles released to country radio didn't even have twang in them. They were 100% pop in the vein of Britney Spears or Katy Perry. That's why it pissed people off that they changed the rules so her songs would hit #1 in the country genre.

I've legitimately not heard a Taylor Swift song on country radio in years. Well, at least not a new Taylor Swift song. So it's completely ridiculous that she's still getting #1's in the genre. At least country pop people like Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line are still popular amongst fans of the genre.

Country music used to be its own unique style. It slowly melded with rock/pop to the point that the line is so blurred, the difference is a couple instruments and lyrical content. Pop music seems to be evolving to embrace more of a hip hop/R&B sound, so country will do the same in about 30 years.
