Why Lovie Smith is just what the Panthers need.

If there is one thing Panther fans agree on, its that Rivera is the enemy and needs to go period. What Panther fans dont seem to agree on is who should replace Rivera. Do we stick with the status quo and hire yet another defensive coordinator, do we hire a up and coming offensive coordinator, do we go the college coach route or do we hire a retread?.

If you look at the past three years in the NFL. You will see A. Going the college coach route can be hit oy miss. You either land a Harbaugh or you land a Greg Shiano who the players hate. Chip Kelly started promising but has lost two home games in a row, Marc Trestman seems to be doing ok in Chicago but then again the Bears where already a 10-6 team to begin with.

But look at the teams that have hired retreads. Rams, Broncos and Chiefs. John Fox has the Broncos as a super bowl favorite (albeit with Manning under center), Andy Reid has the Chiefs at 3-0 after going 2-14 the previous year and Jeff Fisher appears on the cusp of a dynasty in the making over in St Louis.

So the pattern im seeing is of the three retread coaches in the NFL, all three seem to building something very promising, which brings me to Lovie Smith. Lovie and the Panthers are a match made in heaven. Lets see.. Defensive minded HC formerly a D coordinator? Check. Stand up, high character coach that players love? check. A proven, consistent winning HC? Check. Seems like a JR type of guy if I ever saw one. This is Lovie Smith's career record as NFL HC; 81-63 regular season, 3-3 post season and 84-66 overall.

The bottom line is Lovie Smith is as close as sure bet as there is. He has had consistent regular season success, average playoff success, still young at 55 and knows what it takes to win. He also favors a 4-3 defense and him and Kuechly would be love at first sight. The Panthers are at a crossroads, do they take a chance on a upcoming coordinator or college coach? Or do they go with the near surest thing they will probably get only one chance at in Lovie Smith?. If im JR I think about it like this. Why in the world will I hire a upcoming defensive coordinator that could be boom or bust when I can just hire Lovie Smith who was a defensive coordinator who has already seen success as a NFL head coach, its a no brainer if im JR.

The guy is a near sure bet. This isnt like hiring a Gruden or Cowher who has been out of the game for eons. This is a guy that has only been out one season. No Lovie isnt a sexy flashy hire with a sexy flashy Lombardi but he would an immense upgrade over Rivera. He was only fired in Chicago because they wanted a SB. I would just be happy as a perrenial playoff contender and Lovie Smith would provide just that.

I remember a lot of people here didnt want Andy Reid and he seems to be dong work in KC. Im tired of constantly rebuilding and hiring a up and coming coordinator or college coach wouod be just that. With our personnel, hiring Lovie would make us immediate playoff contenders in one season.

I would want to know exactly who his OC would be before he even sniffed an interview. If it's not the most impressive choice in the world then hell no.

Was the Bears O really that horrible under him? When we played them last year they seemed to have a solid enough offense. Grant it it wasnt like the Packers or Patriots but it wasnt awful either.

I'm a fan of a guy who has NFL head coaching experience and a decent track record. I think it fits the Getts mode of been there done that.  I also don't want to see the 4-3 dismantled, it's the backbone of what we've drafted. 

 

I'm not sold on Lovie, but I wouldn't hate it either..

Lovie Smith is absolutely who I want.  He is out of the job right now so I would love to see him named HC this Monday, although I know that is not going to happen.

 

I cannot think of another guy I would want on the sideline that much, except maybe Les Miles.  Okay, so I am not seriously about Miles, just think it would be funny going from a guy who never goes for it to one that seems to on a whim.

Yea my terms are basically stay the hell away from the offensive side of the ball and hire a guy who knows what he's doing there but other than that I'm all for it

Exactly, just makes too much sense. Why in the blue hell would you hire a prospect like Perry Fewell who is a D coordinator with no NFL HC experience when I can just hire Lovie Smith who is a D coordinator that has winning track record as a HC, its common sense. Now ofcourse I know there are money issues and if he wants to coach here, but this is assuming those things arent a factor.

If JR wants to be conservative there is nothing more conservative than a hiring a defensive minded HC that as a solid track record instead of takin a risk on a unproven commodity. And you guys have to admit it would be kind of funny seeing Ron get screwed over by another Bear yet again.
