2014 QB Talk

Note: This isn't for the Panthers but in general for the draft

I was looking to get a sense of what some of y'all are thinking about this QB class.

The top of it is looking something like:

Teddy Bridgewater

*The Bortles

Tajh Boyd

Brett Hundley

Marcus Mariota

Aaron Murray

David Fales

Derek Carr

Johnny Manziel

So who do you like the most out of this class?  One thing is that's it's a helluva lot interesting than this past class.

I know Bridgewater will be the favorite and I gotta say the way he surveys, sits and steps up in the pocket is great but some of these other guys are really intriguing.  I'm a VT fan so have my reasons to hate Clemson but I gotta admit I like Tajh Boyd a lot.  Just like the way he plays.

interesting that you have Hogan so high. I really like him, but he struggled with pressure last night. Hogan isn't pressured much, so what I saw last night was a little concerning, but not enough to drop him out of my top five....

Mariota is way too low on your list. Second or third at the worst.

It's not in order or anything.

I'll admit I haven't seen a ton of Mariota so didn't know where to really place him.  From what I've seen, he has an incredibly high ceiling.

I'm thinking:

1. Bridgewater

2. Boyd

3. Hundley

4. Mariota

I wouldn't sleep on Stephen Morris in Miami.  Fales and Carr are solid.  Out of the Ms of the SEC in McCarron, Manziel, Murray, Mettenberger, I'm indifferent.

I think Hogan could be the best NFL prospect, long term, out of all of the QBs that could come out this year. The guy definitely has some issues that he needs to work on, but then you consider that he has only been a starter for somewhere around 20 games, and it's mind blowing to see the kind of ability that he has. He has the intangibles, he has the arm, and he even has the mobility that can allow him to escape (think Aaron Rodgers' style movement). I believe he is going to be a very, very good QB in the NFL.

But, I don't know if he comes out this year or not. If he waits a year, he could possibly be the #1 QB taken in the '15 Draft, vying for the spot with Winston. Another year in college could definitely do him some good, though. Allow him to work on the things that he needs to work on.

Mariota is number two on my list. I like Boyd at 3.

I have a feeling everyone will be saying Mariota is the #2 or #3 guy by January. Funny that some were saying he wasn't in the top six two weeks ago. Mariota is looked at as just an athlete by many. But the strides he's made as a college QB since last year are pretty amazing, and that's coming from someone who detests all things Zeros football....

i agree i love Mariota's game.sat vs the Huskies, he made some big time throws on every level. had nice touch and zip when needed, and made some nice throws outside of the pocket and rolling out. i would like to see what he does from under the center, but considering how much he has improved as a qb, that could also be an easy transition. plus he has the speed and athleticism to escape the rush and break a 70 yarder run.

1. TeddyB

2. Mariota

3.Hundley/ Boyd

4. Mettenberger- huge vertical threat arm.

5. Manziel

Now I see why you're a Cam hater. I saw right through you on the previous thread. But it doesn't matter because you're probably a product of your environment. Hogan, best NFL prospect? The dude is not even on the radar. There were 26 scouts at the Louisville game to watch Bridgewater. At least you can be honest with yourself.

What does that have to do with why I think Cam is inconsistent...?

    • And really, it should be 4 reasons with the last one being that there were ZERO other offensive weapons on that team in 2024, opposing defenses only had to worry about one player all year long and they constantly double and triple teamed him right off the snap all season.  In 2023, we still had Jacob Cowing who had 90 catches that year and was drafted by the 49ers last year, so teams couldn't just send everyone after T-Mac on every passing down.
    • I wonder if the Hornets view Kon and McNeeley more as forwards and plan to ship off Green/Okogie/Smith for center help. I hope they don’t plan to ship off Sexton as I like what he brings to the team. (2) G - Ball, Mann, Simpson (two-way) (3) G - Sexton, Dinwiddie, Connaughton (3) F - Miller, Knueppel, McNeeley, James (two-way) (3) F - Bridges, Williams, Salaun (3) C - Diabate, Kalkbrenner, Plumlee
    • 3 main reasons he was better in 2023 and none of them concern me for his NFL prospects 1. Totally new coaching staff that was a massive downgrade and had god awful play calling and designs, the entire fan base was ready to run the coaching staff out of town a month into their first season and the play caller ended up getting changed because it was so bad. 2. Along with the staff downgrade, his QB played significantly worse after being the Pac 12 Freshman of the Year in 2023.  Constantly missed T-Mac when he was wide open, lost out on a number of TDs and a good amount of yardage, half the time T-Mac still almost made miraculous catches on the bad passes too. 3. He hurt his ankle over the summer and missed all of fall camp only to return to practice a few days before the season started and I think he had to deal with it all season long and was slightly limping at times mid season too, but kept fighting through it to still be a 1st team All American.
