No long-term deal likely for Peppers

It appears the Carolina Panthers and defensive end Julius Peppers will not agree to a long-term deal before Wednesday's 4 p.m. deadline, meaning the two sides could be headed to another offseason standoff next January.

NFL teams have until Wednesday's deadline to sign players upon whom they placed their franchise tag earlier this year. Teams who don't get a contract deal done by the deadline aren't permitted to negotiate with those players again until after the 2009 season.

Kansas City beat the deadline today by completing a deal with quarterback Matt Cassell, who was New England's franchise player and was traded to the Chiefs after signing his one-year tender.

Indications strongly point to no new contract between Peppers and the Panthers. Hopes for a new deal were raised last month when Peppers said through his agent that he was open to considering a long-term extension after signing the one-year contract tender of $16.683 million.

This was my expected outcome with such short time to work out a deal... Anyone expecting a deal to be done either knows something no one else does, or more likely, had extremely too high of expectations..

A piece of advice for those that are going to read too much into this... just sit back and get ready for a great season. Speculation at this stage about next year is pointless.

I love how these guys always say crap like...

Indications strongly point to no new contract between Peppers and the Panthers.

and then fill the rest of the story with a bunch of fluff. Ummm... OK, what indications? Do you have a real reason to think this won't happen or are you just talking out of your ass?

Personally, I think it'll happen but it's less than 24 hours before the deadline so no need to jump to any conclusions. I'll just wait and see.

    • Lol. Yeah. First of all, some people here had it in for him because they wanted McConkey. They were down on him from the start. As soon as he falls short they got their knives out. Don’t y’all deny it.   But he has given them ammunition with his miscues, good lord not making that catch in Philedelphia for the TD got him fried.    I think some of that got nasty because Bryce defenders need to place blame elsewhere. Talk down about his weapons. There is just bias against him from different factions. Different quarters.    He isn’t helping himself much either, there was no real redemption on the field. Not of the magnitude he needed to produce. At the same time he has for sure been open and I ha en’t seen them use him the way I thought they were going to. So I don’t know what to think think about it really.    My thing is, we have a HC and OC that has their foundation built on WR coaching. That morphed into QB coaching and whispering, if you will. But these fugers know WRs, supposedly. I don’t know how much they have worked with him. I don’t know how much extra he has put in either. I do suspect Bryce Young has gotten most of their attention and they haven’t put XL as a priority project.    Young needed the attention, I get that. I’d like to see them take him on as a real priority before giving up on him. Where we are now is he got his notice that he isn’t good enough. Need to see if that got through to him, maybe he bears down and focuses.  Or maybe he can’t. I can’t defend his shitty play but I do see flashes of a guy that could be an asset and I would just like the staff to take one good last swing at bringing it out of him before they give up.
    • Just grab all 50 and release the ones who don't work out
    • @MHS831I liked your thinking  historically: ILB, S and TE are positions not heavily emphasized in the draft. If you could sign starters at each of those positions it would leave round one open to BPA which would hopefully be an edge, OT or to contradict myself ILB too
