I think AZ and NO....provide reasonable comparisons to how our team has dealt when faced with the task we will see Sunday.  I know several people have commented Shula can't move the ball against the 3-4.  But, I think those games boil down to one simple thing.

 

Redzone failures.  Not much more.

 

@ AZ 4 - dropped TD, settle for FG

@ AZ 15 - dropped wide open 4th down

@ AZ 11 - interception

 

Game got out of hand late in the 4th.  The INT was a great play but the rest wasn't great defense.....in fact it was often bad defense and we shot ourselves in the foot.  Yet looking back we spin it as shutdown D.

 

@ NO 20 - take a sack, FG

@ NO 6 - incomplete, FG

 

This game was different than AZ.....NO actually scored big points (lots in the 2nd quarter) and for the first time really all year we got forced away from Panther football.

 

So I don't think the 3-4 is the issue....bad redzone days.  I don't think we have a bad one Sunday.  I don't think it is what opponents did as much as just poor play on our part.

 

I think we put up big points in Charlotte b/c offense should get some aid as well for more opportunities.  Rex Ryan doesn't have a Drew Brees to put up points and alter this game (and ultimately what his D will face) so he can talk to his bro as much as he wants.

I agree.

 

What's frustrating is that Rivera, and Shula couldn't see the writing on the wall early on in New Orleans, after experiencing that Arizona game that spiraled downward slowly. Touchdowns, not field goals. Why they have to keep learning this lesson is just baffling to me.

Brandon Lafell dropped that 3rd down pass with 15 yards to run which gave New Orleans the ball back. All season we have scored right before the half because we convert those.

It was actually a 4th down pass. But yes, Steve's drop, and Lafell's drop hurt us of course.

 

Player execution, and the coaches game plan have to come together. But the Buffalo, and Arizona games were where Rivera supposedly learned his lesson. Yet we settled for 3 points in back to back drives on the road against the Saints. Bring back Riverboat Ron.

Ehhhhh. You're really reaching here. Why am I not surprised though.

 

Cam was flawless on that first drive in AZ, and our offense moved at will on both those first two drives against AZ, and NO.

Yeah we opened both games hanging in there. When we got behind the crowd got motivated and the defense pinned their ears back. We had no answer. We put up 6 points on Arizona and 6 against New Orleans. The Saints were already celebrating when we put up that TD on 4th and 17. Is that what you call moving the ball?

 Jets DB Antonio Cromartie suffered a concussion against the Raiders Sunday and is rated  a 50/50 chance to play against us. Regardless of whether he plays or not,Cam should be able to complete passes and move the chains because the Jets secondary that features Dee Millner and Ed Reed is a disaster area.

If we put up 14 on those first two drives, in both of those games, momentum alone would have changed the games completely. The entire point is to stop settling for field goals against top opponents. We as fans know this, why the coaches have to learn it is the problem.

Well we need to be in 4th a short. I wouldn't go for it on 4th and long either. Whatever led to us being in 4th and long is the problem, not the decision to kick the field goal.

Rivera chose Shula as his OC, he's ultimately responsible for him. My hope is that Rivera gave him a good kick in the ass this week.

      We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that

      There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
