Officially Concerned about the Offense

I think it is pretty equal. Neither have been awful, neither have been good.

If I told you an NFL team was not calling plays particularly well and also not executing well either.... where might you assume they would be ranked? 25+?

You'd be right. The Panthers 26th ranked offense can't be attributed to only execution or coaching. Its both.

Panthers are ranked at 26th in offense right now?

Might be interesting to note that no team with an offense worse than 24th has ever won a Super Bowl.

Last years Ravens I think where 17th in offense.

The offense is NOT underwhelming. Between the Minnesota game (start of the run) and the Jets game (last full game with 89), we averaged 25.4 points per game. That's 11th in the league. Combine that with a 2nd ranked scoring defense and you're fine. Certainly not something worthy of the insane overreaction going on everywhere today.

Honestly, I don't think a lot of fans understand what they're watching when they see a football game. Sorry to say but they watch the game the way a woman would, like it's all about passes and catches. They watch the game for the big plays and catches. They don't understand that games are coached and played to win them, even if the score end up being 3-2. They don't understand what it means to be 12-4 and having an 11-5 team in your division. They forgot that as a divisional foe the falcons were 13-3 last year. They seem to not understand that we blow out almost every non-playoffs team we face and go to the wire with every playoffs team we face.

Because they're so lacking in understanding the games they tend to blurt out random Mike Shula nonsense. You play and coach to win the game!

Like hell it is. Cam's longest runs this year have all been on scrambles. Wilson's had a few good keepers but he's been running for his life anyways.

Every time a read option play get you a 1st down it's a successful play because it's an addition to the run game and it creates indecision with the defense. Can't expect a run play to get you 15 yards a pop. That's nonsense.

Our read option plays haven't been getting us first downs either. Cam rarely chooses to keep the ball because teams slow play the mesh point and by the time he hands it off the holes in the offensive line usually are closed up. Where we've been successful on option plays are on the triple option and packaged plays where Cam audibles to the run.

Nine in the box. It's what we've seen for weeks. We don't have the tools to deal with it, namely a consistent downfield threat. I've said it over and over, play-calling can't fix a roster deficiency.

Here's what I think we might see in the playoffs, though:

1) Brandon Williams comes out of hiding in more 2 TE sets, and becomes a vertical option across from Olsen.

2) A few more deep shots to Ginn, just trying to back the safeties off.

3) Some more spread formations, to stretch the defense and give Cam more running lanes if no one gets open.

And despite all of these "troubles" we're still winning and have a chance against anyone because of our defense. There's still cards up the sleeve, but teams have been stuffing the box since San Francisco, I don't know why this surprises anyone.

How many successful deep balls have we seen lately? We've had some big runs after the catch, but everytime a ball is lofted up long, it's mostly dropped or overthrown.

Cam had a beauty against the Jets, plus a perfect bomb to Smith against the Saints before he went out. And you don't necessarily have to complete the deep passes, just utilize them enough to make the secondary nervous. All it takes is one completion to blow open a game.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
