NFC South - Most competitive division in the NFL?

this article was posted a few days ago by David Newton, ESPN. Now that the season is over, it's official, we have won the division and kept the streak alive. No team has won the division in consecutive years and each team has won the division exactly 3 times. Hopefully, we break this streak next year.

http://espn.go.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/3418/nfc-south-best-division-in-nfl

For the 12th straight year since the division was formed -- whether it's the Carolina Panthers with a victory at Atlanta or the New Orleans Saints with a win over Tampa Bay coupled with a Carolina loss -- a different team than the previous year's champ will win the division.

No other division in the NFL can make that boast.

If the Panthers (11-4) win the division, Carolina, Atlanta, New Orleans and Tampa Bay each will have won it three times. Some call that parity. I call it strength.

The division also has sent three teams to the Super Bowl in that span -- Tampa Bay in 2002, Carolina 2003 and New Orleans 2009. Tampa Bay and New Orleans won.

Here's a breakdown of NFC South winners:

Atlanta: 2004, 2010, 2012.

Carolina: 2003, 2008, 2013

New Orleans: 2006, 2009, 2011.

Tampa Bay: 2002, 2005, 2007.

AFC East:  New England (10), Jets (1), Dolphis (1), Bills (0).....damn

AFC North:  Pitt (5), Ravens (4), Bengals (3), Browns (0)......bye bye chud

Nice! Thanks for putting that together...really proves how even keel our division is vs. all the others.

I didn't realize that Seattle had done that well. Philly gets the award as the biggest bust in the playoffs, division winner or wild card.

Some interesting things to note:

-Philly, despite six division titles, has only been to the superbowl once (0-1)

-Green Bay, despite seven division titles, has only been to the superbowl once (1-0)

-Seattle, despie six dvision titles, has only been to the superbowl once (0-1)

-Chargers with zero trips to the superbowl and five division titles

-Colts with only one trip to the dance with 8 division titles.

If anything, this list proves that it isn't just about winning the division.  it is about who is plaing the best football at the end of the year (Niners, Panthers, Patriots, and Eagles all fit that mold right now in this tournament).

A lot of those teams that won the division a huge number of times (New England, Indianapolis, Philly, Green Bay) had really weak divisions for a long time.  Besides the NFC East, most of those divisions has a perennial bottom feeder, something the NFC South doesn't have.  Until around 2008 there was NO competition for the AFC East.  The Bills are always around 5-11.  The Jets gave New England a run for their money a couple years but it still wasn't really that close most other years.  Indy dominated their division until Manning left, and now they're set to dominate again with Luck (another awful division).  The Texans were perennially awful until Manning left.  Now they have Jacksonville who is in for probably 10 years of missing the playoffs.  The NFC North has Detroit who was a guaranteed two wins for the other teams in their division for many years.

The NFC South benefits from the entire division being pretty close in talent every year.  A few injuries and a few balls bounce the other way for Atlanta and their season wouldn't have been an entire loss.  They just lost some close games early (much like Carolina in 2012) and the team just couldn't catch up.  They're still a really dangerous team, as is Tampa if they hire the right coach.  NFC South is the second best division behind the NFC West.

Something along these lines that I was thinking of the other day... The NFC South is relatively new compared to many of the other divisions. Regardless of names, the NFC East and North and the AFC East and West teams have been playing each other for much longer, but I feel like the rivalries in our division are just as strong as many of the storied rivalries in those other divisions.

I think that this strength and parity plays a huge factor in this, although the relatively tight geography of the division is another thing that fuels it.

    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.

    • Ryabkin could be the steal of the draft, he was a Top 10 pick heading into last season and had a rough year.  Lots of GMs passed on him because of that and his workouts. Pick has really high upside and Svech should be able to translate Rod tearing his arse a new one for making dumb plays since Svech has had several years of it.  🤣😂
