The Canes have traded Kevin Westgarth to Calgary for Greg Nemisz. Nemisz was drafted 25th overall in 2008 but has never amounted to much. It is unlikely that Nemisz will ever see the NHL. This trade was more about getting rid of Westgarth and his uselessness as well as saving about $700K in the process.

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired forward Greg Nemisz (GREHG NEH-mihtz) from Calgary in exchange for forward Kevin Westgarth. Nemisz will report to the Hurricanes’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.

“Greg is a young player and a former first-round pick that we hope will continue to develop into a solid NHL player,” said Rutherford.

“We thank Kevin for his time with the Hurricanes and wish him well.”

Nemisz, 22, has scored five goals, earned four assists (9 points) and posted a plus-5 plus/minus rating in 32 games this season with the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat. The Courtice, Ont., native is in his fourth professional season, and has appeared in 15 career NHL regular-season games with Calgary, earning one assist. Nemisz (6’3”, 197 lbs.) has played in 206 career AHL regular-season games with Abbotsford, notching 35 goals and earning 46 assists (81 points).

The Flames drafted Nemisz in the first round, 25th overall, of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He was a member of the Windsor Spitfires’ back-to-back Memorial Cup-winning teams in 2009 and 2010, and represented Canada at the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship.

    • Dude, I think I might be having Jarvy withdrawals... I ripped the sleeves off of all of my t-shirts in my sleep last night. Every bite of my Alpha-Bita cereal spelled Seth, this morning. And, I took 7 naps before lunch. I'm losing it guys! Jarvy's Jaunty Band of Jaggoffs are getting more play than he is... smh Team Canada doesn't treasure Jarvis the way he deserves. He should take his band down to Liechtenstein, get a bag of passports, and start his own Olympic team! The raw animal magnetism of Jarvilicious will bring in a handful of NHLers on its own. And, since the IOC believes in collective punishment, he could have his pick of the rookies. Then, just fill out the rest of the roster with the maple blooded great white northerners who couldn't make the top squad. Can't trust this assembled awesomery to just any old Liechtensteinien with a clipboard and a whistle. Gotta bring in a legend worthy of this gold medal gambit. A hockey HOFer with the balls to buck the system and the aura to match our maverick. Huere geil, Vaduz!!! 2030 Gold Medal guaranteed!
    • Tennessee isn't trading a QB on a 2nd round contract that has starting experience.  That's bad business.
    • OT is the top priority as it is both an immediate and future need.  I wouldn't be past trading up slightly to get the guy we want.  You need that rookie contract right now.  Icky is a dead 17.5 million for the season.  Morton is 20+ mil for the season, Hunt is 20+ mil for the season.  There needs to be forward thinking regarding the future.   Caleb Lomu is a left Tackle, he's a solid prospect, he may be the best pick for us now and in the future.  I would seriously consider cutting Hunt after 2026, and let Lomu and Icky fight for the LT job, loser moves inside.  Icky's future may be at guard after this injury anyway.  If Damien Lewis keeps up his level of play he will need to be paid sooner rather than later.  Yosh and BC can be our top two depth OL at an affordable price.  You will need to look at OT again in 2027. Getting an EDGE for the sake of getting an EDGE outside of the top 10 is pretty risky.  I wouldn't be against eyeing someone like Cashius Howell, Derrick Moore, or TJ Parker in the 2nd (even if we trade a future pick to move up) or DDS in the third. I'd love to see us try to sign both Leo Chenal and Matt Millano in FA.   Chenal for the blitzing element we are missing from our LB corps and Millano for his elite coverage.  They could both work in tandem.  Remember, our FO has deep ties to both KC and Buffalo. I love thinking about the draft, but until Free Agency hits, we are clueless.  Looking at the strength of FA and the draft, OL is priority #1, LB #2, and EDGE #3.  We know what happens to Bryce when protection falls apart.
