Jay Gruden: 'Foolish' to make RGIII a pocket passer

"I'm not going to try to turn RGIII into Andy Dalton or Drew Brees. He isn't them. They're not him. I would be foolish to try to turn RGIII into a pocket passer. It would be foolish. The way he is as a runner, we have to take advantage of that. He strikes fear into defensive coordinators when he runs outside. I'm going to let him be himself."

The question is whether it's smart to let Griffin "be himself." Through two seasons, the quarterback has been unable to protect himself from unnecessary punishment (It's a mild miracle Griffin made it through 13 games this season before being shut down.).

^ why everyone here want RG3 to fail and Luck to succeed? What's the inside story on that? Am I missing something!

See, here's why you wind up looking dumb...

Nobody wants Griffin to fail (other than as an opponent). People expect him to fail, primarily because he's too easily hurt.

You can't seem to tell the difference between evaluating how good someone is and rooting for them to succeed or fail. It's not an emotional thing for most of us like it is for you and your buddies.

Maybe when you grow up a little and learn to take the emotion out of it, you'll figure out nobody's out to get your favorite players. We're just calling 'em as we see 'em.

Seems a lot of people on here like to pile on Griffin. No he isn't perfect, but he's still a talented player.

If he was going to have any chance of becoming the quarterback he was drafted to be, it wasn't going to be with Mike Shannahan.

I certainly wouldn't write him off yet.

Shanahan was never the QB guru some people made him out to be. Minus Elway, he never accomplished much of anything.

That said, the approach Gruden is saying he plans to take with him is not going to set him up for success. Just the opposite really. It plays into his weaknesses in a way that's likely to shorten his career.

Curious as to where you guys are getting the "general consensus" about RGIII and Luck?

I freaking hate Luck... he's a neck beard goof ball.  I've kind of seen that as the general huddle consensus.

I actually kind of like RGIII but he won't last.  Unlike Cam, he doesn't know how to avoid contact and he's no where close to Cam's size.

Honestly Gruden's approach is probably the right one, but he's gonna get hurt, mainly because like Vick, he throws himself around too much.

I mean I watched it, I think people are reading a little too much into it. It's still January, and the guy was just hired. I can't see Jay Gruden being that completely oblivious to the fact that the starting quarterback of his new team has had durability problems running the football.

We'll see what happens, but I'm not optimistic.

Honestly, I think he got this job more because of his last name than actual merit. And frankly, his brother's rep as a QB guru is just as hollow as Shanahan's.

How about Matthew Stafford? He has yet to accomplish anything in his entire career as a football player. If it's about projecting, how about you project on that one! I like how you get in attack mode everytime you make a response. RG3 is not my favorite player. Not even close. You guys just seem to poo on certain QBs for no particular reason yet so defensive on some and I just wanna know the inside scoop on that. I just don't know why it matters so much whether RG3 fail or not. There are probably maybe 8 good QBs in this whole NFL, the rest are just a draft away from being replaced. Among those failures(at least for this year) is RG3, why does he matter so much for this board? He's just a failure, right? If he fails he fails, that's where I stand. I'm sure the QB position is a sacred sanctity for a lot of people. A honest person  would admit RG3 doesn't belong there as the spot is reserved for guys like Luck and his future Luckians. Are you an honest person?

Stafford is overrated, overpaid, over everything.

You talking about honesty is a laugh given your obsession with tearing down Andrew Luck.

Grow up, kid.
