I'll be driving into the VA and PA mountains on a regular basis. Also do a lot of ski weekends at Wintergreen and Whitetail. I used to have an xterra back in the day, made a switch to a GT 'stang the year it was redone, and then went to my current double cab tacoma.

Nissans just feel to cheap to me. Too plastic-like on the interior and I just never liked the ride.

I'm going to have to check out this crosstrek and compare it.

I definitely can't argue about the cheap feel of their interiors. Otherwise I probably would have gone exclusively Nissan (or Infiniti) years ago.

Toyota Land Cruiser, FJ Cruiser, Xterra or 2001 Montero are good options. All much cheaper than 27k

If you can wrench you could buy a Land Rover Discovery for 5-6k and put another 6k into making it a monster. Then buy a cheap Honda for MPG.

I've had several friends with jeeps and they all had problems. My mother had a Cherokee that rolled down our driveway and into the mailbox because of faulty parking break. Another had 2 engine failures, although she was a women.

The only two jeeps I know first hand to be good was my fathers CJ-7 from the 70's. That thing was awesome. The other is a 2003 Cherokee Laredo. Didn't really like the steering of it though, felt like I was driving a car. The new wranglers are nice but I wouldn't shell out the money for one.
