CHILL THE FUG OUT

I guess 'us retards' would like to see them build upon last year.  To date, we have not signed anybody and lost our top 4 WRs, LT, both safeties, top CB and the only decent return guy we have had since Michael Bates.  Not to mention, our answers for both guard positions are youngsters coming back from injury.  Sorry, that doesn't make me feel any better.

Contrary to your post, Collins wasn't the best LT.  The best LTs signed before Collins. Panthers need that position filled with a decent vet and Collins was the last decent option after day 1.  DG missed on all of them.   It is a big drop to Oher and the other remaining options.

Most of us aren't comfortable looking to the draft and scraps of free agency to get 7 starters.  The sky isn't falling but it looks more like rebuilding than a team in transition.

Hurney was doing his job too ... just not that well.

I completely understand what you are saying and the emotions being felt.  We definitely overachieved last season with many bargain bin players out performing both their contracts and reasonable expectations.  We really should not have been that good last season.  As such, those bargain bin players left for bigger contracts (that due to the cap hell, we cannot afford).  We will be forced to take the same approach again by adding lower tier players later in FA to fill spots....and hope that we hit magic in a bottle again.

It is kind of like the statistical success that Cam had his rookie year.  He was much better than people thought he would be and he set the bar ridculously high for his soph season.  Unexpected and premature success drives up unreasonable expectations.

We have 19 players that will count 107M toward the 2015 cap....so, we are still in cap hell.  It is going to take time to shed some of these ridiculous deals and get things righted.

That's a good voice of reason MH and I agree.  We did hit magic in a bottle when our late free agent signings made significant contributions.  That was a little skill and luck.  My 'beef' is that in some instances, we have to pay market to fill a key position, namely LT. The remaining free agents are a considerable step down.

It seems the pendulum has swung to the other side.  We went from Hurney overpaying everybody to paying nobody.  Sure, it will fix the cap but I am not willing to wait another 5 years for a playoff run.  I still have faith ... we are still in the first week of free agency.  I think most of us still have faith.  However, we're not liking how Smitty was treated and DG dropped the ball with backfilling Gross.  Hopefully, he'll have better luck with WRs and other positions.

if your comments about Smith are true, then im not sorry to see him go. his legacy? yes. im sad to see that wont end in Carolina. but i can celebrate his legacy by sitting in the stands with my 89 jersey on, reliving the great football memories Smitty gave us. its a bright future for our beloved Panthers. we dont need people creating problems in the locker room and challenging authority in-organization, even if it is someone as meaningful to the team as Smith was. i love the man for who he is, faults and all, and for what he has done for the Panthers and the Carolinas, but the future is now. all this to say... i agree with the OP. just wanted to point out that i'll STILL be sporting my 89 jersey to my next game!
