Brandon Lafell to the Patriots

Recommended Posts

We were 29th in the league in plays over 25 yards last season. It's not like we lost these "great" wide receivers!

I think what some (not me) is bashing GMan for is not necessarily getting rid of last year's crop of WRs. They are bashing him for getting rid of poor NFL talent (last year) for what appears to be no NFL talent. And considering that at best we will end up with a cast of second tier WR FAs and rookies...they have a right to bash the man.

Even if we land the 2 best WR rookies, they have a right to be concerned and question the move.

YEEEEEEEEEESSSSS!!!!!!  Thanks so much!

So this means that ... no matter who we else we may sign.... We will InEVITABLY select a WR with our first and second pick in the draft. FINALLY

Yep. At this point I would not be against selecting a WR in the 1st and 2nd round. Or trading up to inside the top 10 and selecting one...

LT Bruce Campbell (Washington Redskins)

FS Mike Mitchell (Pittsburgh Steelers)

LB Jordan Senn (Chicago Bears)

WR Ted Ginn (Arizona Cardinals)

WR Dominik Hixon (Chicago Bears)

CB Captain Munnerlyn (Minnesota Vikings)

WR Brandon LaFell (New England Patriots)

7 free agents lost and 3 of which were starters. Think of all the compensatory picks we will receive next year!

Patriots sign WR Brandon LaFell (3 years, $11 million): C- Grade
If this is Bill Belichick's solution for the receiver position, then he must not like Tom Brady very much. Brandon LaFell isn't a very good player. He doesn't have much talent, as he struggles to separate and also maintains a high drop rate. Giving him nearly $4 million per year is a bit preposterous. Having said that, LaFell has never worked with a great passing quarterback (bring on the Panther-fan hate mail), so perhaps there's a chance this will work out. I wouldn't bet on it though.

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
