Would Gettleman have drafted Cam?

READ FIRST-This not a thread bashing Gettleman. This is not a thread praising Hurney.

It seems like in every thread many people love to continuously throw Hurney under the bus. The man deserved to be fired, but he also should get credit for bringing in the foundation of this football team that Gettleman has the opportunity to build upon. I'm talking about

Cam Newton

Luke Kuechly

Greg Hardy

Charles Johnson

Ryan Kalil

Greg Olsen

These are the guys along with Star, that Gettleman is building this football team around. So give the man some credit, he was terrible with contracts but he gave us and Gettleman an outstanding core to work with.

Now given what we've seen and heard from Gettleman, "the 7 second pause", "has to make plays from the pocket" and that's after Cam Newton set records in the NFL. Like he said after the season, Cam proved it. I don't believe he was 100% sold on Cam when he got here. He may have been 80 or even 90 but not 100%.

Cam had the potential to be this good, but there were legitimate concerns with him. Do you think Gettleman would have drafted him, or a Von Miller, Marcell Dareus?

It depends on if he had gotten a QB during free agency.  I can easily see him going for Darius rather than dealing with Cam's question marks.  However, I can also see him recognizing Cam's potential and taking him.  But that's looking at it as if he's in a vacuum.

It's not just about Gettleman vs. Hurney.  There's an entire scouting staff that has input into the process, and I'm sure that the coaches have a little say as well.  So the real question is whether he would have given all of them the same level of influence that Hurney probably did.  And I say that because during the entire time he was here, you never heard whispers that Hurney drafted on his own, so it stands to reason that he listened to his staff.

I think he would have gone with Cam, personally, as I think that there is a world of difference between the "entertainer and icon" story that the media was pushing, and what the coaches and scouts learned about him behind the scenes.

Gettleman hasn't done squat nor put his signature on this team. This is a Hurney core carrying a bunch of misfits Gettleman brings in. Until Gettleman can sit in front of a high demand FA and convince him to sign with us he'll never get his peers' respect and this team will always be the underdog that overachieves. Star falling to us was the most obvious decision to make. This off season is going to stain him and he better show results soon. Now he's just known as the laughing stock who cut his entire receiving corps after 12 win season.

I think so. QB was a crucial need and Cam was pretty head and shoulders better than all other 2011 prospects at the position. Cam is also a big 'ol boy, which impresses Gettleman as we know.

I think he would have gone with Gabbert. More similar to his prototype, Eli. Gettleman is not as smart as you all think he's.

    • Dennis Rodman’s son lands Summer League shot with the Hornets   The Charlotte Hornets are coming off a promising 2025 NBA Draft class and will enter Summer League with no shortage of new faces looking to make an impression. But the most interesting addition didn’t come from the draft board. Instead, it’s DJ Rodman — the 24-year-old son of Hall of Famer and five-time NBA champion Dennis Rodman — who’s bringing some extra attention to the Hornets’ Summer League roster. Rodman played four years at Washington State before making the move to USC for his final season.  He wasn’t exactly lighting it up with the Trojans, putting up about 6 points, four boards, and an assist each game. But he did shoot well — hitting around 41% from the field and draining 36% of his three-pointers.  Standing 6-foot-6, he’s got the size to play on the wing and offers some versatility, which could be just what the Hornets are looking for as they try to fill out their roster. The Hornets’ Summer League squad already has plenty of fresh faces with this year’s draft picks and young guys fighting for a role. But Rodman’s last name alone is enough to turn heads, and now he’ll get his shot to prove he belongs once the games tip off in Vegas. Charlotte’s Summer League team is already drawing interest with recent draft picks and young players hoping to crack the rotation. But Rodman’s last name — and his potential to bring energy and toughness — adds another layer of intrigue. What Rodman lacks in college stats, he makes up for with hustle and competitiveness — traits his dad was known for throughout his Hall of Fame career. If he can bring that same energy and show growth in Summer League, he could carve out a role and surprise some people. Though the odds are against him making the Hornets’ final roster, there’s no denying the spotlight that comes with the Rodman name. The Hornets kick off Summer League next week in Las Vegas.   Dennis Rodman’s son lands Summer League shot with the Hornets
    • At this point, I only care what he does in 2025.
    • Question to the posters on this thread because you are knowledgeable--I love watching and pull for the Canes, but I never played so I don't have the understanding I had when I played football then watched it.  Having said that, Do you think we are weak at Center?  I see the team to be pretty strong on the wings, promising defense, and weak at Goalie.  It would be ideal if the Canes had 1 more position to upgrade, not 2.  I don't think you can count on Anderson to play a full season and he is 35.  However, are we solid at Center in your view?
