Q: With over 45 years of following the NFL, including the last 19 as a devoted Carolina fan, I'm asking you, have you ever witnessed a WR evacuation like the one Panther GM has initiated, beginning with a very productive "team leader" like #89? Especially without an equal value replacement in line! Also, isn't it apparent that the increased success of Ted Ginn Jr. and Brandon LaFell was a direct result of the double teams Steve Smith drew in most situations?

A: I can't remember one so dramatic. Last year, the Patriots entered the season without their five top pass-catchers from the previous year, but that wasn't all on Bill Belichick. Aaron Hernandez was in jail. Rob Gronkowski was hurt.Wes Welker left in free agency. The Panthers elected to lose their top four wide receivers. Steve Smith is going on 35, but he's still good enough for around 70 catches. Most of the new additions at wide receiver are viewed more as slot guys than outside threats. Unless the Panthers hit it big in the draft for receivers, this could be a tough season for Cam Newton and the passing game.

Exactly.  The answer was lacking too.  This article I posted earllier has it right.  This is the year to turn the page at WR.  I'll mis Steve as much as anybody else, but it was time.  He's too intense to fade away as a Panther.

It may stink to have massive turnover, but this is absolutely the time to do it, and, let's face it, we were well below average at WR anyway.  There's every chance we'll end up better.

You realize Clayton's wife is wheelchair ridden, yes?

I think he got sloppy seconds because I, too, made it to that same benefit dinner...  it was a drunken hazy night of debauchery.  You're not allowed to judge because it says so in the bible..

Yeah. I love Smitty, but he was never much of a "team leader' in the traditional sense, and neither was he "very productive" last year.

yeah, but even then..  we let go of 1 guy, and didn't overpay for 3 others..  How this qualifies as a "WR evacuation like the 1 the GM initiated" is completely off the wall..

And somehow Hixon became a legit receiver for us based on 1 fuging catch all fuging year long..

The entire premise of the question was to keep an old receiver who would activate much larger cap hits in the future if kept this year only to massively overpay for 3 lousy receivers (Ginn could be debated) and just destroy the cap altogether for the next 3-5 years...  brilliant question and answer.
