Bobcats Select Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Jun 01 2012 02:41 PM carolina-chuck Charlotte Hornets
I'm jumping on this bandwagon now! Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, imo will be a STAR in the NBA. Probably the safest pick for us at no.2 also. Many believes MKG will make an immediate NBA impact. Gilchrist is an NBA ready player whose skills should help him start from day one. Some have think that he is an All-star waiting to happen. His work ethic is also tremendous. Someone who will do all the dirty work and clean up the mess.

MKG is not a great range shooter, but one who will drives hard to the basket and earn those hard points. He will only improve his shooting in the pros. A great defender and rebounder forward who would be a huge upgrade for us over guys like Derrick Brown, Thomas, Moon, Najera, and White. He will be someone who could defend guys like Lebron and Wade in the future. Many people think we need a big man or so, but HELL! every position is a need for us. We need help at every position. Can't go wrong taking a guy like MKG. Gilchrist should be our first priority to building a championship team for the future. He shows up every game with his intensity and never give up mentality. Will only help Kemba and Biyombo grows.

Gilchrist has been compared to guys like Gerald Wallace, Andre Iguodala, and Scottie Pippen.

DRAFT PROFILE:

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
Kentucky - Freshman (Born 1993)
Small Forward
6'8" 228lbs

The Good:

-
great size for the small forward position
- 6'10" wingspan
- elite defender who is good/big/long/athletic enough to guard multiple positions in the NBA
- relentless driver who is terrific at getting to the hoop and finishing
- extremely hardworking, intense player
- always gives 100% effort on both ends of the floor
- big game experience
- terrific rebounder for his position
- is a great scorer in transition which should translate well to the pros

The Bad:

- poor outside shooter - will need to improve his shooting range to keep NBA defenders honest
- still extremely young (won't turn 19 until September) so might not be ready to contribute immediately
- needs to work on his ball-handling
- probably doesn't project to be a "superstar"

NBA Comparison:

*Andrei Iguodala/Gerald Wallace* - both in terms of playing style (do-it-all) and level of play (All-Star)

The Skinny:

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is probably the player who did the most to improve his draft stock this season (at least among the elite prospects). He now has a legitimate shot at being the second name called by David Stern in June. While he might not project to be a NBA superstar, he does look like an All-Star level player and a mainstay on the NBA's All-Defensive Team.

I like Gilchrist a lot. He needs to develop a shot and overall offensive game, but everything else is outstanding. Players improve offensively all the time, and if he doesn't he'll still be a good addition, He might not be a superstar, but nobody on the board after AD is a sure thing.
It fits with what Dunlap is looking for more than you guys realize. If you've listened to anything he's had to say since becoming coach this pick is easy to understand.

Dunlap outright, pointblank, plain-as-day stated that he wants a good 3-point shooting team. What in the hell are you slobbing about?
I think he will be a good pro not a star though. He only scores in transition but plays very good defense.

Next year Shabazz, Noel, Zeller, or JMM? Probably finish worst and get the 4th pick.

this wasnt dunlaps choice. this had the scrub cho/mj written all over it. bad bad pick

You are surprisingly negative for a guy with a Bright Eyes avatar. Chin up. Sunrise, Sunset, and all of that.

I'm slobbing about the fact that he's spent more time talking about changing the culture of the locker room and focusing on the physicality of the game than he has 3 point shooting. We didn't hire Mike Dantoni, and it damn sure more important to add physicality and leadership than it is to add a three point shooter.

He also said he wanted high energy guys that will tenaciously defend and hit the floor for loose balls every night. It's almost like we'll need multiple players to turn this team around.
Dunlap sounds like a clown. He just said we drafted a defensive stopper at #2.
Again. Its about long term. Don't just draft a scorer and watch him struggle on a bad team when you can get a guy like MKG to be hopefully the final piece of the foundation.
I love the pick. He has just as much potential as any of the other clowns. He works hard to.

Dunlap got his guy. He sounds estatic about Kidd-Gilchrist

"From the owner on down, we're executing a plan here in Charlotte"
Let's go cats, I'm pumped about this pick. If we keep getting high picks for the next couple years- we could be a young dangerous team in a couple seasons.

He played on a team with 4 1st round picks. How do you know he can't score in the Nba Idiot?
MKG was the best player, get over it. we will get scorers, its a 3 yr process.

MKG will be a 15pt scorer everyone is way too worried. he will be able to score
we have a scoring problem last year, so we draft one of the lesser offensively tooled players in the top of the draft.

and folks wonder why people take jabs at Jordan and his franchise.
