Bryce Young - High Ankle Sprain, out minimum 1 week
kungfoodude replied to UNCrules2187's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think the wailing and gnashing of teeth over Dalton is more than a bit hyperbolic. I expect him to be a slight improvement over Bryce but not some savior that's going to march us Nick Foles like to some divisional glory. He should perform adequately enough that he won't be the sole reason we are losing games. That's my expectation. -

Canales doesn't have us at 4-3, I sincerely think we're 4-3 in spite of the job Canales has done so far. We're 4-3 because we've played the 2 worst teams in the NFL, the worst defense in the NFL while they were missing their best offensive player, and an epically embarrassing performance by the Falcons. You could make an argument that with better coaching, we should actually be 6-1 right now and I don't think that would be hard to justify. -

As much as I don't think BY is a qb that will ever get us anywhere...I am not looking forward to the slog that will be the Dalton led offense next sunday. -

We finally have a winning record and y'all are debating about firing the head coach? QB I can see; that's a legitimate debate. But if Canales has us at 4-3 despite limitations at QB, why is that a sign that he should be fired? If anything it's the opposite. -
I've said before that I think a lot of the folks looking for "the next Cam" don't understand just how unique Newton really was. It's likely to be a loooong time before we see anything close to Newton again.

You're right, his stats somehow are even better than how he actually looks when watching the games, which is remarkable given how poor his stats are. That's the thing, we're 7 games into T-Mac's career and even though people see some things he needs to improve upon, he's had numerous plays already in just 7 games where you can look at him and say, "this kid has star potential" Bryce was the #1 overall pick who 2.5 years into his career, has what, MAYBE 5 plays that make you say "he could be an average to above average QB in this league" Most QB's have that in the first month of their rookie season, he just flat out doesn't pass the ye test even before you dig into his paltry stats. Dart already has more plays in his 3 starts that make you think he has franchise QB potential than Bryce has in his entire career. -

Oh, without a doubt. Vinny always did have a big arm, though. -
Anyone notice Jalen Coker yesterday?

Hopefully he was just rusty after so long off. -

I would caution that PURELY stats is not a completely conclusive argument against a 5th year for Bryce. Looking at the whole picture does seem fairly conclusive in my personal opinion. All that being said, I really do think the wheels will have to come completely off Bryce the remainder of the year for them to NOT pick up the 5th this offseason. I also think if he misses significant time with injury is hampered by this injury it's going to create a lot of mental gymnastics in that FO/Ownership circle to get us to picking that 5th up. Not what I would do but I fully expect it to happen. -

I think it's fair to give Dalton a full week of practice to prepare before really judging how he'll do with this updated receiving and running groups. Last year was different with the benching and already sucking ass. 4-3 and an actually injured Bryce should have him more motivated -

He and Young were definitely out of sync on his targets. But the entire offense was out of sync except Rico. -
Woah, how did we get from Flacco to Tua?

Well he's done for the season, he might be able to come back for 3 or 4 games but there won't be a point. I've seen enough of Byrce through 6 games to know who he is but he'll probably get another season. -

Bryce hasn't done a single thing to prove he deserves to have his option picked up. I'd have less of an issue with us declining the option and bringing him back as the starter next year than I would have us picking up that option, as that means he's on our cap books for the next 2 years instead of 1, even if he's cut before year 5. Tua threw for 3,500 yards with a 25-8 TD-INT ratio in just 13 starts the year before they picked up his option, and then threw for over 4,600 yards before they gave him his extension. Kyler threw for 3,722, 3,971, and 3,787 in 16, 16, and 14 games (while rushing for 544, 819, and 423 in those seasons) before they picked up his option and then signed him to an extension before year 4. Jones threw for 3,200 yards with a 3-1 TD-INT ratio with another 700 yards and 7 TDs rushing in year 4 before they signed him to his extension. Bryce has thrown for 2,877 and 2,400 yards in 16 and 12 starts his two seasons, while being on pace for 3,128 yards in a 17 game season so far this year. The closest comparison to any of them was Jones, who while he's turned it around this year, is someone I think everyone can agree was not a player who deserved that extension after that season. If people think those other QB's having their options picked up and/or given extensions were a mistake, in what world can you look at what Bryce has done and make any rational argument for him even being brought back as our starter next year, let alone also picking up his option that would cost us about $27 million fully guaranteed. -
I don't think we would actually play Hooker but hopefully we also just don't see. I don't view Dalton/Bryce as a worse option than Winston/Howell. I just think we disagree on this specific subject is all.

My prediction(before the season) was Canales gone at some point during the 2026 season and Dan fired before the 2027 offseason. -
I agree. They are not winning QBs. I'm not talking about winning games. I'm talking about having an NFL level player at QB so the last 10 games aren't a complete waste for the rest of the players. Dalton into Hooker when Dalton inevitably ends up on IR is throwing away the last 10 games.
-
It's not realistic. If that were the case, a guy like Watson would already be on the street. You can't torpedo the future of the team for "fug this guy specifically." It's very bad business.
-
I don't think we will agree on this situation with those players specifically. I don't view them as winning QB's and in fact they mostly lose.
-
They honestly might be willing to do that to dump him. He's burned the bridge there from what it seems.
-
The key word is good. No team is going to give up a good qb. If they give one up you can bet they aren't good. We have enough not good already on the team.
