ESPN's Barnwell Early Offseason Grades
Peon Awesome replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yeah I think calling Mike Jackson's contract a miss isn't fair. $5 million for your starting outside corner is a bargain. You can't expect that kind of value signing to be a shutdown corner, especially when you've got Horn locking down the other side, basically forcing the opposing QB to preferentially pick on Jackson's side. I think the biggest question mark is Wharton, and admittedly he's been injured a lot so it's more of a TBD. But as solid as Bobby Brown and Ashawn Robinson have been filling in, it feels more like money that could've been better spent elsewhere. -
I don't think Jones gets out of Indy, unless the wheels fall off and the team collapses, which has happened before to them. Also, regarding Jones, Indy felt adamant they had a roster that was good enough to win now, and the results so far speak for themselves. While I do think the Panthers are not catshit terrible, and that Young is holding them back, I would not declare the roster ready-to-win right now. There is a chance that Jones doesn't deliver the same results somewhere else.

I'm sorry, but I find it very hard to believe that defenses playing two high safeties is causing this kind of league-wide decline in deep passing. I honestly think most of it is a result of chickenshit play callers who are afraid to stretch the field and would rather rely on dink-and-dunk passes that make games near unwatchable. Two high safeties has been a thing for DECADES and teams were still throwing deep until recently. It's a mentality more than anything purely schematic.

This just isn't true last year. This is one of his passing charts... Here's another: And a worse game where he's still pushing it deep: The myth that Bryce wasn't passing deep at all in his career is nonsense. But he often failed to put the ball in a good place for yac, and has had other issues. And he is waaaay worse this year.

That's a good point, but maybe a silver lining in this case of the Rams offer is that it was supposedly 1st rounders 2 and 3 years later. So hopefully we would've fired Fitterer before at least one of those -
As good as our Oline has been running the ball, pass protection has been average at best.
-
Last year, Bryce was attempting and completing balls around and past 20 yards. I mean he had 2 TDs that were ~20 yards in weeks 16 and 17. He had And he had one of the highest intended air yards per pass attempt in 2024, at 8.6. This put him at the same as Herbert, Jackson, Love, and many others. He was well above the league average of 7 something. His average depth of target was 9th best in the league. After week 10 he basically was one of the best deep passers in the league and has only one game without multiple 20 yard completions. The issue is this year, his average intended air yards is down to six. He isn't going deep at all, and when he is, he's missing people. He doesn't look good this year.

So, Is Bryce Playing this Week or Nah?

AT did come back and looking at AT now at Minnesota he has 5 catches for 47 yards and 0 TDs on the season. Not sure he is some game changer on offense but yeah Bryce had good chemistry with him due to lack of options. They get overhyped not doubt. Just looking at last year, I liked him in the Chiefs game, Tampa right after (over 300 total yards 2 TDs and 0 turnovers, Chuba's fumble cost us the game if I remember correctly), he was fine in Arizona but wasn't asked to do anything as the running game carried us, and the Falcons game obviously. Dallas last year was horrible he had like 2 fumbles and 2 INTs and it was during his post benching little run. This year I liked what I saw in the Arizona rally (first quarter sucked), Dolphins rally for the win (learning to finish), and the Cowboys (some clutch throws and a solid winning drive). He still has a lot of work to do to get an extension IMO, I'm just saying people are looking at some of those Dalton games through rose colored glasses.... -
mrcompletey11 said he was the worst using stats from the NFL site. I'm simply showing he is wrong.
-
They aren't random: They are the QB's just above him in the rankings. You know, the metrics you brought up to prove how bad he is. If I was cherry picking, I would have included these QBs as well. I mean their completion % isn't exactly above average either.

So AT was the only addition. How is AT looking in Minnesota? Again Moore was the leading WR with targets, yards, and a score the first week Dalton was injured. It's kind of crazy you are trying so hard to defend Dalton but sure I'll play along. Bengals game (the magical 220 yards) 25/40 with 5.5 yards per attempt (something you would absolutely hate on Young for) 2 TD and 1 INT. Box Score looks ok but watch the game and see the Bengals are up 31-14 with 2 minutes left in the 3rd (this is what you typically refer to as "garbage time stats") when the defense switches to prevent to allow these 5.5 yard average throws down the field including a nice 10 yard and 21 yard pass (the 2nd for a TD) to the one and only Johnson. Next up is the Bears 18/28 for 136 yards and an INT with a 4.9 average. Not sure you want to talk about that one. Oh and Chuba had only 13 carries for 97 yards and a TD averaging 7.5 yards per attempt. Atl is the other one you claim is good with 221 yards 2 TDs and 2 Ints with a 5.8 average (again something you hate on Bryce for). He looked ok but threw not 1 but 2 4th quarter INTs to go with his 5.8 average and lose this very winnable game. That leaves the Commanders with a 11/16 93 yard and another 2 INT game with another 5.8 average. I think it's safe to say this one is a bad one.... So again that LV game is the outlier and his first game playing in that offense. Look I'd much rather Bryce be good and the answer for obvious reasons, but I can 100% admit when he is playing bad. Glancing at a box score and see 220 doesn't tell the story and I'm pretty sure you know that. These were all bad games outside of the LV for Dalton. -

So would you seriously be happy with exercising his fifth year option and committing to him for the next two years? -

I wasnt smearing numbers I posted straight from that website. And who gives two fugs if he is better then TL or williams? You just cherry picking rando qbs to pump him up? -
Your still smearing the numbers to make a point. He's not "one of the worst". He's playing just as well as Caleb Williams and Trevor Lawrence. There are 11 worse than him - bye your own standards.
-
He’ll always have that one, Nice. Those DBs were shocked I think, that it went over their heads Announcer “40 yard rainbow” lol that was great.

my bad I forget to say "one of the worst" now he is mid 20s congrats baby steps (no pun intended) - Today
-
You said he was the worst QB by far. He isn't - by far.
-
I disagree: Red lines are the trending line. Red columns are the first game of each season.
-
yeah, I wish NextGen wouldn't skip random games. For whatever reason they didn't do his week 17 game. In fact, the 2 games they didn't do for him appear to be both the Tampa Bay games. Other Tampa game isn't there either. Everything else is there.

Theilen came back and Bryce had him. Which he was lost for Andy after the first game, or am I wrong on that? And people are so overrating most of those Bryce games. There were a couple of good ones and a very good one. Of his basically two complete very good games. That Atlanta game in that stretch and the Dallas game this year being the complete ones. Maybe I missed one but the 2023 Green Bay game was really a very good 4th quarter and a average 1st half. Maybe I missed another but that NYG Europe game was nothing to brag about yet people did. Just sayin. I mean you can name his really nice games on one hand. Out of how many now? 33? 34? Something like that.
