David Newton questions McCaffrey's support of Bridgewater
davos replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
*converted nascar analyst correct? The clip actually reminded me of how good of an all around dude, player, leader, example CMC is. If we don't lose any talent on offense in a Watson trade, all I'll say is look out. Heck, or even land Wilson/Fields/Lance. If Fit can pull something off where we don't lose Brown, Chinn or Burns, we could be rolling. -
Schefter thinks Darnold worth 1st rounder if traded
davos replied to Ja Rhule's topic in Carolina Panthers
He's the one younger starter level QB I think would worth be exploring IF we don't land one in the draft. I think we need to let that play out first if/when we don't land Watson. Watson, draft, then open season if no young stud is found. Darnold should then be one of the main targets IMO. -
What I like as well is that the kid seems like a very sharp dude. Air Mcnair meets Watson with a dash of Cam (not just saying Watson bc he's the flavor of the year in trade talks) I wonder if we're playing down Lance to assure Fields & Wilson go ahead of him. I mean, if you look at summer 2020 to about Sept, he was the #2 QB for a large chunk of both reputable and idiotic analysts.

Shefter's getting back-scratched to help make NYJ's offering for Watson look more appealing. -
Going into the year, people were talking up Lance & Fields not being far behind Lawrence. Now by years' end, there's this Zach Wilson kid out of nowhere from BYU. It just gives me pause. Lance though, built like a brick. Just super interesting. He's got all the tools but bc of his competition, there's not much to really look at placement wise in tight coverage and under pressure. But if we think we can groom this kid, let's roll with it. Such amazing potential. It

It's Wilson pre-draft, then potentially a QB in the draft, THEN worst case, we start looking at these type of avenues a la Carr, Darnold, Minshew, Trubiski, etc. If that's how we prioritize, then sure, let's explore it. I wouldn't give up a 1st for Carr. Maybe a 2nd & 6th type combo.

I like me some Trey Lance and would love him in black & blue. He's really the QB I see as realistic for us and his upside is a top-level QB. I've loved Fields, especially bc he can go on these mad accurate mid-to-deep passing rhythms but OSU scares me. 100% agree. Wilson went from unknown to beloved and it's just a limited window. Definitely saw the jittery nature of his pocket presence you're describing. It's such a toss-up.

Some have been mentioned: Minshew - I really don't hate the idea. I'd be pretty interested to see how he looks with a supporting cast like ours. Darnold - Not so much a darkhorse but if Watson isn't New York bound, I'd throw an offer at the Jets after the draft/if they go Fields/Wilson I also don't hate the Jalen Hurts idea but don't know if the Iggles will make him available. Not many good existing options but my top choice would be Darnold if the Jets don't land Watson.

Trade up with Dolphins seems the most likely at this point
davos replied to AU-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
My dream prioritization list: 1. Trade for Deshaun Watson (unlikely but give it a shot) 2. Trade w/NYJ to #2 (or) MIA #3 for Zach Wilson/Justin Fields (slightly less likely but give it a shot) 3. Trade with PHI for #6 to get Trey Lance ahead of DET and other trade-up teams. I've really come around on Lance. (This is my current realistic trade up if he's available at #6) We give up our 3rd+22'4th, or see if he falls to 8. 4. Take a stab at PJ Walker or a new young QB. Darnold? Positions us for 2022. -- All scenarios involve Teddy either being part of a trade or cut post-June 1st. -
He is a hell of a lot better than Teddy. If he did well, you could roll with him for 4+ years but the combination of another vet QB with that last name could be too much for us fans haha.
-
I'd be surprised if he stays at the QB position. He looked absolutely terrible at times. He's a 5th-7th rounder.
-
Just saying--Chris Simms more than not has been pretty spot in the last few years with his intel and even draft rankings. But his sources come from SF soooo them missing out on Stafford, he may be getting info that makes that org look better.

Valid points but I guess where I'm coming from is that if you have a balanced focus to it all, re-signings/FA, draft/trades/everything, you understand when a trade is appropriate and it's worth it. And then in the years where let's say a team may just have 2nd-7th rounders (or less), they're able to make the right signings both for the short and long term in the FA. So with that in mind, our cap completely opens up after the 2021 season, with hopefully just Moton & CMC having large contracts of the guys we currently have. We'll throw the 5th yr on DJ so don't have to worry about re-signing him for a bit. So Fit & Rhule will have cart blanche to do what they want. The other side of the coin --I was factoring that in with having the right coach in place can do wonders, even if you aren't hitting on all the draft picks and/or give some up for the guy you want. I was looking to the Rams because sure, these aren't necessarily great moves by any stretch of the imagination, but McVay has gotten them back in rhythm and back to the playoffs when things really should've fallen apart.
-
Would including Shaq+YGM give us too much of a dent on the D? At this point, I'd rather trade up in the draft but we just have to keep Chinn, Brown & Burns. All three have perennial all-pro potential.
-
Exactly. I think people need to get themselves ready for a different style of team building. I can only guesstimate at this point but I think we truly will be aggressive. It's not just smoke and mirrors/owner speak. Despite the noise, you are right that we'll be in great shape after next season and a new GM to construct it all, they want to find the guy to build it all around and the NFC will be wide open next season. Especially if Brady/Gronk retire after another SB win.
-
Funny thing is yes, many teams did bust on 1st round QBs, but still had strong success despite the QB play and mortgaging draft picks. Rams, Eagles, Bears, I see you.
-
We may not be drafting a QB with the 8th pick but maybe later...
davos replied to musicman's topic in Carolina Panthers
There's about to be a QB drought, let's try to find one long term. You've gotta be aggressive for a top pick or a trade candidate IMO. We were w/Stafford and will continue to be. -
Yep. Bridgewater isn't here next season, I just don't see it. Post-June 1st cut.

I'm stuck in a blizzard so f it, I'm going for a long post. How to say this directly and out in front: --statement-- Trading a lot of assets, including multiple firsts, is simply not as disruptive to a franchise's future as it seems. --food, thought-- Just food for thought: The Rams had recently relocated & finally left Jeff Fisher when they last had a first round pick. With the Stafford trade, Sean McVay's only 1st round pick will have been Goff, who they traded up for. And they were pretty quick about looking elsewhere after just a few years with a #1 overall pick and even making a SB with him. In this time, with super spotty QB play, a zero, ZERO 1st round picks: They have traded away 1st rounders, even trade out of the first, made the Super Bowl. Made the playoffs multiple times. 11-5 (playoffs) 13-3 (SB appearance, NFCC) 9-7 10-6 (playoffs) That's the Rams last 4 seasons. --elsewhere-- Kansas City spent two 1sts and a 3rd for Mahomes New Orleans spent two 1sts and a 5th for Marcus Davenport Eagles used two 1sts, a 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for #2 to land Wentz The Bears have haven't had a losing record since 2017 and went 12-4 with Mitch lol. Oh Mitch. --thoughts-- The funniest part of this is that 3 of these QBs didn't even work out...yet in the that time, all four have made the playoffs, two of those teams managed to make the SB. One actually won it. Another squad in KC found a stud and is looking at a potential 2nd title in a row. All circumstances are different and all these franchises were at different stages, BUT, all I'm saying is that using an extra 1st or two to land the guy you want does not ruin a future. Heck, it doesn't ruin your future even if it doesn't work out. You shoot and you will either hit or miss. In these cases, the likes of Spencer Drango, Rashaun Penny, DeAndre Baker, Corey Coleman, Shon Coleman, Jack Conklin were on the other side of the equation in some of these picks received. Yikes. One could argue those misses on abundant picks still did nothing for teams like the Browns. We actually landed one of the random extra picks of these deals and guess who that treasured 3rd rounder was?: Daryl Worley. However, I admit, look at the Titans & Bills though. I give them props, they helped set up great futures in their trade downs (KC-BUF, LAR-TEN). This is why if we don't land Watson, I am fully supportive of a trade up if we want Fields or Wilson. DO IT. It's not like we're giving up a full draft class, we'll have 4-5 more picks to land linemen, defenders, and/or a skill position dude. Just go for it. DO IT. The Rams are in a constantly aggressive win-now mode when they have a super young coach and a generation of his career ahead of them. They figure out the player they want, they go get him. They've also have been very smart in letting the right guys walk like Trumaine Johnson, McCleod, Gurley, etc. --conclusion-- My conclusion here is that I foresee a massive quarterback drought with a generation retiring and guys from 2010-2019 busting left & right, years taking a toll/Cam-ified, or being entirely inconsistent. Tua, D. Jones, Trubiski, Goff, Wentz, Rosen, Paxton Lynch, Bortles, Darnold, Cam's near the end, Luck retired. I don't even know if Jackson or Mayfield really have it going strong. They're good right now, but good long term? I dunno. 2000s QBs going goodbye: Ryan, Rivers, Ben, Rodgers, Brady, Brees. 6 long term, SB level starters. That is going to leave SUCH a huge void at QB league wide. Right now, there's basically ~4-5 teams safely w/ a QB who they know will give them a shot next year: TEN Ryan Tannehill KC Pat Mahomes BUF Josh Allen SEA Russ Wilson DAL Dak Prescott (injured/future sorta questionable?) -- Young but looking good/still early: Kyler Murray, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert It entirely makes sense why a 33 y/o Stafford was worth this much. He's got ~4-5 years to go and the league (particularly the NFC) will be prime for new perennial contenders. It's open season, I see no team really standing out in front in the NFC and that's what LAR is trying to do. In the likely event we don't land Deshaun Watson, I fully support a trade up for Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, or dare I say Trey Lance. His potential is super freaking high. He's not some Jordan Love scrub and if Goff was a recent #1, Carson Wentz was a #2, Mitch T was #2, then why the F not. Give it a shot, maybe we still win a SB and the guy busts lol. Sometimes the right coach can get you there, sometimes it's a generational QB, but most of the time, it's a balanced combo of all of the above. But if you want to find the QB, you've gotta take the shot.

Panthers let go of a couple of front office guys

Carrier was my first ever Panthers autograph. He signed a gray kids football w/blue laces and our old logo. Still have that partially deflated thing. It's my oldest Panther relic. -
Most Disappointing Moves of the 2020 Offseason
davos replied to AceBoogie's topic in Carolina Panthers
Teddy was the Sarlac, the team and fans were Lando, & the FO is Han & smart enough to shoot it from further grasp and torture. Would've felt like a thousand years of mediocrity.- 35 replies

Hell yes. Don't underestimate getting a 2nd or 3rd from HOU in return. They're going to be awful next year. A 2022 2nd is basically a late 1st and their 3rd a late 2nd. So we get rid of TB, use our 2021 1st & 2nd basically on Watson. Still have 3 picks in the top-80ish for 2022 and offset the 1st for a 4th in 2023. Packaging our 2021 second rounder is the stinger in this but I'd do it.
-
I've mentioned it before but I'd like to somehow keep 2023s 1st rounder. I'd rather stretch things out and add players, but it could make our offer less valuable than Miami, NYJ or elsewhere who both have Tua and Darnold respectively. I also think we try to package HOU's 2nd rounder in 2022 which will basically be a first. Or maybe their 2022 3rd. That way, we retain (3) top-80 picks next year. The hit won't be as hard My ideal package would be: 2021 1st (#8) 2022 1st 2023 3rd 2024 1st Shaq Thompson Teddy Bridgewater (hell, maybe toss in Donte Jackson) for Deshaun Watson HOU 2022 2nd/3rd -- So then next year, we either have (2)2nds+3rd or 2nd+(2)3rds in lieu of a 1st, 2nd, & 3rd. We don't lose any crazy talent & I could see Shaq being valuable to Houston. Houston may try for a better player but we can't have Chinn & Burns in discussion IMO. As much as I hate it, WRs are producing all over so I don't think we can or should have DJ off limits

Matt Rhule continues to show why he's the right guy for the Panthers
davos replied to NAS's topic in Carolina Panthers
What I appreciate is that he wants real football. Not just a solid player on one end to fill a back of roster or on the opposite end, some all talent that's not really in it. He wants focused football from his players centered on constant improvement. It sounds cheesy when you type it out but when it's executed correctly, that's how you create a damn good team. I'm lean towards being all in on Rhule. He's got the right genes to coach in the NFL and do it very well. We're on a good path. I had the perception he was going to be this over-positive preachy type but he's a f*cking ball breaker.
