The Roar Podcast with John Ellis is back

But the NFL experts still have not arrived at that conclusion. I get what you are saying, but they would have cut their losses had they been as certain as you seem to be. Canales thinks he can fix it, and if you run more out of the pistol and shotgun, the drop back issue can be mitigated by scheme. If he has a system of reading his pre-snap target and then to his check down, the bouncing can be mitigated. I worry--don't get me wrong--but I don't think the NFL coaches and execs surrounding him are in a position to lose to prove they did not pick the wrong guy. We let Baker go, and many were saying the same stuff about him. Canales had less than a year with him before he became their starter, and he was incredibly improved. I just do not think now is the time to be writing him off. This discussion is important--you have seen enough to move on--I have not. If we agreed all the time, this would not be a discussion board, it would be a cult. -
Smith Sr. & Zierlein discuss their top 10 WRs

I like Ladd, Pearsall, then Washington (his production at UVa was impressive). Corley? I am not sure he is much more than a Shenault, but I have to read up on him and watch some videos. TE is sorely needed, and a RB thumper is indeed something this offense needs. There are some I really like (listing schools to avoid looking up names) Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Troy. All should be day 3 picks. -

Yeah, if we go pre draft, I agree 100%. But if you are really looking at mechanics when the WRs were not running good routes and getting separation, the system was not for Bryce, no decent TE, always playing from behind (DL and LBs tee off), a terrible OL, RBs averaging under 4 yards per carry, and the play calling was described by some announcers as "predictable," Bryce may have had the worse situation ever. Yes, these circumstances would have definitely put the mechanical issues under the microscope. Now think about his high school to Bama years. He was always in the lead, always had the better OL, always had a good D, always had elite WRs. We saw him in the best case scenario and his mechanical issues were not issues then--We saw him in a perfect scenario. I mean, how many games per year does Bama have a legit chance of losing? 3 or 4? -

When I played, players that were juicing did not even try to hide it. I went into the dorm room of one of my teammates from Miami and he had syringes stuck in his bulletin board. No, he was not diabetic. He was cut, huge, and moody. Not sure how he dodged the drug test bullets---he even bragged about using in closed circles. I think there was others doing it too, but I did not roll with that side of the room.

I was very surprised that they had Pearsall rated so low. To me, he is around #6. I personally think that he is perhaps the best day 2 candidate and would fit our needs if you look into 2025 and beyond. Smart, a great athlete (won nearly every category at the combine), has excellent hands and runs good routes. Am I missing something? -

Here is the bottom line---if you assume that the offense was bad because Young was bad, then that position is understandable. If you assume Young was bad because the offense was bad, that is understandable. Personally, I think Bryce will improve a lot in 2024. There just aren't too many rookie (or veteran) QBs who would have done well under these circumstances....full stop. I have NEVER heard so many different experts (game announces throughout the season) analysis experts, talk so much about a team's receivers not getting separation. Experts know how important this is because the qb has about a second to get the ball in that window--we did not have any windows. Furthermore, we had 7 different LGs and 8 different RGs. 62 sacks, most up the middle. So he had people in his face with no open receivers. And people are saying, Bryce sucks!! My question is this: What is he supposed to do? Make sure his plant foot is secure and he is holding the ball to his ear? -

He has some good arguments, but too often in life we address the symptoms of the problem as the problem. If we address the problem correctly, the mechanics improve. I would like to know what he is supposed to do with DTs and LBs in his face in 2.5 seconds when his WRs are not open. Plant that back foot and throw a dart? -

What about the CB that played behind the Calf? Were Cam's mechanics good? but if we use your example, Florida developed a system for The Golden Calf of Bristol's talents and he won games and a Heisman. Canales is claiming to do the same thing. You want to blame a rookie QB's reaction to being forced into a system not designed for him, being given predictable plays, having pressure in his face from A gap, WRs and TEs covered, and always playing from behind. So provide an example of a QB who had good mechanics and succeeded in those conditions--all of them. This is a good argument, by the way. I appreciate the difference of opinion. -

I disagree. Has everything to do with shitty mechanics and nervous feet. No blocking, WRs running bad routes and not getting separation--when would mechanics of the QB become the problem? Having said that, we both need to just wait and see. Remember Rosen, that QB who was drafted early by the Cardinals, I think? He was let go after 1 season. I think they want to see what he can do -

Not sure if I was reading tea leaves or hearing what I wanted to hear, but when she said that she and Orlovsky were watching and both repeated--"there is no separation" and then she referred to the digression of the OL--that should give us hope for Young. Then she mentioned that his WR did not come back for the ball during a route (Shenault)---broke his confidence--not in himself, but in his WRs. Now, take into account that our TEs underperformed and both backs averaged well under 4.0 yards per carry. Neither were that good at catching passes out of the backfield, and Chubba is not good in pass protection. As I said last year---nobody could have been successful under those conditions. Do not expect Thielen to have the year in 2024 that he had in 2023. However, she noted that Johnson gets open, but referred to him as the ideal #2. She said that whoever we get, they will get better separation than what we had last season. HOWEVER, if you read the criticisms about Legette and a few others in this draft, they are not that strong out of breaks despite sub 4.4 40 times. We need a solid route runner, and if we have to play Johnson at the X, so be it, for a season. -

It's about that little birdie time in a few days

I have never seen Zod and Verge in the same room at the same time. Just sayin'. Here is some hope--earlier in one of my educational, cerebral posts, I stated that the Panthers have shown no interest in bringing in a Center. No meetings or visits that we know of....just saying that Corbett will be the Center this year. Behold: (If this is common knowledge then I missed it) -
I am really leaning toward Pearsall. I mentioned him in early March, but he is going higher than most mockers think. MARK MY WORDS!!! I am beginning to think we roll with what we have at TE--and that is sad--but maybe Tremble steps up.

I keep finding myself in the situation to take Cedric Gray.

Matt Harmon & Charles McDonald on some tier 2 WRs & beyond.

I think a top WR projected for round 1 will fall. Mitchell comes to mind. But if you think about it, we have a player this season who has averaged about 900+ yards per season for the past 4 years and he is going to be 28. Thielen had 1000 yards last year. Mingo should improve; he will be 23 tomorrow. He had 43 catches for 418 yards and usually there is growth from year 1 to year 2. So frankly, we need a guy who can play the slot because we all pretty much KNOW that Thielen is gone. It is possible that Dionte Johnson leaves too after this season. So if the Panthers take a slot, I get it. I think Pearsall can be more than that--it is a stereotype. However, if he is the slot in 2025 and can get some reps in 2024, that is pretty good if you can hold onto Johnson. Johnson had only 717 yards last season compared to Pickens' 1140, but Johnson played in 4 fewer games. He was on a 1000-yard path. So my point? With Johnson here and Mingo developing, isn't an "underneath" WR more pressing considering Theilen's age and this is probably his last year? Isn't underneath going to be more important for Bryce? I am asking--not sure. Now, does Johnson have all the traits you look for in an X? Not really, but neither did Steve Smith. If we were to draft Legette, could he be groomed to be the X in a season, moving Johnson to the Z? That would make Mingo rotational and still necessitate a slot WR. So I see slot as the one need that is more certain. So if we go after a guy most feel is a slot--Ladd, Corley, Washington, Pearsall, etc. I would get it. However, their would be a good one at pick 65 (Corley, Washington, Polk, maybe even Roman Wilson). People need to remember that bringing in a player for 4 visits does not mean that you are in love with him; it probably means they are undecided. -
Prolly not, but in fairness, most TEs are probably not a good idea before round 3. Good exchange.
-
I agree. I keep having this feeling they take Shipley from Clemson, but I want the RB from Kentucky.

At Texas. Sanders played with his hand in the dirt on the LOS about 75% of the time, which is why I feel that he is undervalued a bit. LaPorta, I think he was a second rounder, had 657 yards during the 2022 season. Sanders, with 3 WRs on his team who will probably be drafted in the 2024 draft (two in rounds 1/2), and the best RB in college football, had 607 yards. That is close.

The think about Chubba and Sanders--they have brick hands--Chubba was better last year, but I would not consider him a dual action threat. I am not that happy with his pass blocking either, and in the NFL, that is a very underrated skill for a RB. Sanders was a terrible signing.
