Foxhole: Running game a key

December 4, 2008

Panthers.com

Comments from Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox following the team's practice.

On injuries: Did not participate: Adam Seward (ankle) and Hilee Taylor (calf). Limited participation: Na'il Diggs (quad). Full participation: cornerback Ken Lucas (head).

On defensive end Julius Peppers winning NFC Defensive Player of the Month for November: Contrary to some of the things you read, he's played pretty good. He's been a big reason why our defense has played pretty consistently over the season. I think he's probably had in this stretch his highest sack total, not that that defines a guy being a good player. I think he's been very good, a big reason why we're 9-3.

On needing to run the ball better against Tampa Bay than in the first game this season: One of many things. We really did not execute very well. We had the ball at the one-yard line that our quarterback and running back ran into each other and fell down. We were probably fortunate that we didn't fumble the ball and lose it. There are a lot of areas that we need to improve in. The running game is definitely one of them.

On the Buccaneers' offensive line: They're good. They've been solid. They are young, good players - have been for some time. They made a change from last year at center with (Jeff) Faine. But they've got a good stable of backs, even with some injuries. They've got a mobile quarterback - that always helps your rushing yards. Obviously, that adds up when he's getting 30 yards a game rushing the ball. A very physical offensive line. I think they've added a bigger, more physical tight end recently as far as the blocking element.

On what he does on a Monday before a night game to keep the players focused: I don't think our guys will have a hard time focusing on this one. It's much like any night game. They are kind of on their own. You've got to give them a chance to get ready. I think by that time of the week they're probably sick of us and we're sick of them, so you've got to give them time to get themselves ready.

On if he likes playing on Monday night and all of the hoopla that goes along with it: If I really had my druthers it would be Sunday at one every game. But it is the only game on. There are a lot of neat things, a little bit like a playoff game - everybody is watching you play. It can be good if you play good or it can be bad if you play bad. It's alright. It's good it's at home.

i was hoping to hear him say we were going to open up the offense a little more this time. last time we played them we relied on the run too much, and failed miserably. if we get our passing game involved, then we have better offense than tampa bay, and can outscore them. I hope we dont bang out heads against the wall again...

i'm not sure what game you saw, but they didn't run the ball enough.

a blocked punt and mistakes in the passing game is what put them in the hole in the first place.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
