dave gettleman interview:

 

Marty: speak about this training camp compared to the last one

 

DG: familiarity helps everybody. Ron and I know each other now. working through issues and problems. We are very open and honest with each other. THey believe in themselves now.

 

The san francisco game was the franchise changing game. THey came back with the mentality of unfinished business.

 

Marty: winning breeds winning, doesn't it.

 

DG: it's a mentality of expecting to win. Ron and I talked a lot about earning the right to make the team and earning the right to win. four 4th quarter wins by Cam. Mentions him getting hit in the face while making those throws. This franchise expects to win now.

 

Marty: How do you evaluate the offensive line?

 

DG: it's interchangeable parts, we have a date where it will be decided. It's through reps, it's through games. We got young guys and it takes time. Said it's a learning process for this offensive line. It's about getting the right five and moving on.

 

Marty: mentions the lineman on the Giants superbowl team.

 

DG: Big men allow you to compete. if you are not strong on your offensive line. you're done.

 

Marty: what's your priority #1

 

DG: We gotta get the offensive line straight. The WR group is very competitive. as is the cornerback group. It's sorting all of that out. Nature may take the decision making out of this. Shame on us if we are on the 53 and we look at each other and we say "i don't know about this guy." making sure that everybody gets equal opportunity.

 

Marty: how does this defensive line compare to some of the ones you had with the Giants.

 

DG: i think this group is deeper inside. 4 guys who could start for anybody. It's deeper, this line is deeper. We never had that depth that this group has.

 

Marty: you always had big receivers on the Giants

 

DG: being with Ernie for so long. its all about your QB and it's about TD makers. Kelvin had 15 tds last year. Everyone knew that ball was going to him in the Championship game. Everyone knew it was going there. and that's part of it. Kelvin consistently makes big plays in big spots.

 

Marty: buffalo game what is the checklist

 

DG: health. 1st group have a good series. the rest see how they play. These games are for Ron though

Cam interview:

 

Cam: camp is going good. and i just wanna take this time to thank the man, the legend himself, marty hurney. I'm gonna state the obvious but this man gave me the opportunity that i will never forget and be forever grateful to marty hurney for giving me that chance. I'm forever and ever and ever grateful to this man right here.

 

Marty: talk about the learning process

 

Cam: it hasn't been fun at times. It was a learning curve. Having Chud. He opened the floodgates with material and i didn't like it then coming from Auburn. It was force feeding a kid with carrots. I complained a lot. 20, 30, 40 plays installed. But you start understanding the scheme and protections eventually. This process helped me tremendously. I didn't see the blueprint. I thought it was too much, too many plays. We butted heads with the workload. I was used to looking to the sidelines and seeing plays and making plays.

 

Marty: the ankle looks good

 

Cam: yea it feels good. I'm reminded by it occasionally but it feels good. It has forced me to get back, mentally.

 

Marty:Can it be a positive? make you focus on other things

 

Cam: absolutely. All my life i've had the ability to get myself out of trouble. That's my gift and thats my curse. It is forcing me to stay in the pocket.

 

Marty: whats it like to throw to a guy your size.
 

Cam: We've always had big play potential ever since i've been here. Kelvin has taken that torch. Kelvin coming across the middle is like Olsen going over the middle.

 

Marty: Timing?

 

Cam: Timing is something that is overlooked. Nothing simulates actual gametime. This is what I was thinking. I was expecting you to go here. You can't trick me out there. I only got a certain amount of time to get this out. We gotta make a solid decision together.

 

Marty: expectations?

 

Cam: be the #1 offense. what does #1 offense entail: being able to run the football. being able to throw the football when you want to and when you have to. #1 offense doesn't certainly entail the statistics. We need first downs. Advance the rectangle (lol). we got a lot of talent on this team. The big mammoth outside, benji, t king, avant, cotchery. Anchored by ryan kalil. They are ready for the challenge. Control the clock like we know we can and we know we need too.

Marty: that front 7 is familiar faces

 

TD: one or two new guys, but backend we got veterans who know the game with Decoud and Harper. We got guys who know where they are suppose to be and know how to play off of them.

 

Marty: the top defensive line how does that feel.

 

TD: man, they are the best D line in the NFL. You got Star, Kraken, CJ, Colin, KK. What you see sunday it doesn't just happen. those guys come in ready to compete. Me and luke combining for 327 tackles doesnt just happen. (WOW)

 

TD: marty knows how i feel about him. I call him out of the blue and how much i appreciate him. They had to make a decision on me. I sit before you today because of that decision. And my career is blossoming because of him.

 

Marty: speak about training camp this year. Is it a little different

 

TD: absolutely, I knew the tackle number by us because it motivates us. I played the game too high last year. i need to stay lower. When you approach a lineman and get seperation. You gotta stay low and use your hands. I missed more tackles than i am accustomed to last year. That's one of the things i'm working on. The knee brace limited me. I need to be a better tackler. I missed too many tackles.

 

Marty: the front seven considered the best in the league. does that add pressure?

 

TD: we are going to show everybody last year wasn't a fluke. We know teams are gonna give us our best because we are regarded as one of the best in the league so we are gonna prove why we are.

THanks Rum. He should have interviewed Stewart, but he can do that anytime because he is probably living in his guest room.  Here is my contribution:

 

MH: Stewart, aside from earning about $18,000 per yard gained since I got drunk with your agent and we inked your deal, how do you see your role with the Panthers in 2014?

 

JS: Well, Mr. Hurney, you can look at the money I made by the yard if you want to, but I tend to look at it another way:  I make about $ 300K per practice.  Thanks to you for that, btw.

 

MH: You are welcome, Stewy. Let me ask another way:  Do you expect to see the field in 2014?

 

JS: I sure do.  You can see it great if you stand on the benches instead of sitting on it.   Gotta be careful though.  I once tweaked my ankle jumping down from the bench.  Missed 4 more weeks of practice.

 

MH:  About the money.  You are one of the richest backs in the NFL, yet most people outside the Carolinas think you are retired.  What do you have to say to them?

 

JS:  I am not retired.  Why would I do that?  I get paid a ton for doing what I would do if I was retired.

 

MH:  When it comes time to hang 'em up (referring to his floppy hat and shades) or retire, what is next for Jonathan Stewart?

 

JS: Nothing, for a few years, until I am broke again.  Then I am prolly gonna sue the NFL for these concussions I got.

 

MH:  What concussions? 

 

JS: You will need to talk to my lawyer about that.

Hurney had a good run.  He took us to the Superbowl.  Unfortunately for him, he invested in rb's right before their market value crashed, and a few of the players that he believed in didn't pan out.  

 

Either way thanks Marty for the willingness to talk directly talk to fans and answer our questions.  Thanks for setting us up with Cam. Thanks for your service to the CPs.  Good luck in the future.
