Revisiting PS4 vs. XBONE

So the new console controversy, Ubisoft is locking both consoles at 900p/30 fps to prevent a debate. Does that mean anything to you?

The better question is if the game will be fun? Or is that secondary to display statistics?

Only thing it means to me is that I wont be buying any of their games.  Especially after the PC downgrade that they gave Watch Dogs.

I never got buying a game twice.

A fool and their money are soon parted.

So as I randomly muse on the ideas of video games in the 21st century, I keep coming back to the idea of game play versus graphics.

So as we know, PCs will always have the graphical advantage and a huge install base, but will have a stigma associated with them.

The consoles will never have the horsepower that a PC has, and will aways be "gimpy" compared to even a very modest gaming PC.  Yet they get all the press and development (now) from the "industry."

Finally, there's mobile.  Massive user base, wide variety of hardware, and making money hand over fist!  The technology is catching up, but only in limited games (that are usually expensive for the freeimum audience).

Since this industry is a business designed to make money, where is the future of gaming?  Is it going to be in pushing the boundaries of physics in graphics cards?  The familiarity of the family console?  Or in your cell phone?  Can all the arenas continue to exist?  Or will one eventually die off?

PS - I'm still planning on an xb1 =)  Then maybe a PS4 if I come into money...

  • 1 month later...

XBone's are now priced at 350 If you get the bundle with Assassin's Creed. You do not get a Kinect but I wouldn't buy it to dance around my living room anyways.

Thinking hard about it. I have a new in box zelda wii u I could sell and nearly break even. I am curious if Sony has a response.

Sony doesn't currently need a response.

I think the whole "xbox vs playstation" argument is about as over played as it can get.

People should simply play what they want on what they like.  Don't like the business practices of a company?  Don't play the game.  Prefer a controller?  Play that system.  Frankly there is enough diversity of games and devices now for anyone to play and do what they want.

I like Halo, I like the xbox controller.  I have an active xbl subscription, and I'm getting more friends daily through Destiny.  I'm having fun!  I hope everyone else is!

Folks getting negative and ugly over a video game or system is rather silly.

Is PSN still down? :P Plus dont you need games to play on a gaming console?

I have all three next gen consoles so I know all about which ones have games and which ones don't. I didn't touch my Xbox from about Feb till when Forza Horizon 2 came out....

Also, it's quite funny how the PS4 still has about 40% more consoles sold all while not having games.

The Kinect hackers of the world thank you for not having one.

Still thinking about selling that Zelda Wii U?

Hm. Bet you decided to do that partially because of all the PSN "maintenance's" too =)

Maintenance really doesn't effect me because it's typically Monday while I'm at work, and I can always use my PC if PSN is down.

All jokes aside how is Forza 2?

Fairly good. Picked up Sunset Overdrive and playing that now too. Haven't really grinded into FH2 yet, but seems like a shinier version of FH1.

    • Bryce has improved each season, fwiw, statistically.  His slope is rising.  (Not to say I am high on him--I am not, but I have not given up on him--nor have I given up on XL, but damn he pisses me off)  CJ's slope is descending.   I was never a Penix fan.  Never, I say!
    • That is definitely the down side of all this--on paper, I would offer up a second rounder for him if he passed my interviews.  He has already gone through (seriously?) a treatment program for gambling addiction.  I just see him as a first round talent that we could get with a second rounder.  If I liked Bryce and felt good about paying him $50m per, I would not touch Sorsby.  If Bryce regresses or stays the same--he is going to expect to be paid.  Sorsby, in my view, has a better long-term future as an NFL QB.  He is big, mobile, has good arm strength, and makes wise decisions (on the field) with the football.  He is a great dual threat, RPO QB.   I think he is a perfect solution for the backup qb position and insurance for Bryce should he get injured or suck.  Pickett?  King?  yikes.
    • Hard to say--they are very unpredictable--this article came out last night---after our comments:  (ESPN)   How has the NFL approached NCAA players with gambling violations in the past? David Purdum, sports betting reporter: Quarterback Hunter Dekkers and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte were found to have committed gambling violations while playing college football, and both were allowed to pursue NFL careers. Dekkers was the projected starting quarterback at Iowa State but was ruled ineligible ahead of the 2023 season after an investigation found he had bet on at least one game involving the Cyclones (among other wagers that violated NCAA bylaws). The bet was just $15 on Iowa State to beat Oklahoma State in a 2021 game in which he did not play, but it led to the end of his Division I career. He played one season at Iowa Western Community College in 2024 before signing with the Saints as an undrafted free agent, and he spent last season on the practice squad. Boutte was arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in January 2024 on charges of underage betting while at LSU. The arrest came roughly eight months after he had been drafted in Round 6 by the Patriots, and the charges were ultimately dropped. According to police, Boutte placed more than 8,900 wagers from April 2022 to May 2023, including betting on at least 17 college football games -- at least six of which involved LSU during that span. The NFL did not discipline Boutte.
