Hurricanes 2014/15 Season

For the past two weeks I've wanted to make a thread to discuss the upcoming season, then I realized we're probably down to about 5 fans right now. Once we hit free agency the media surrounding the team and our fanbase dropped off the face of the earth. That kind of thing happens when you fail to make any notable moves in free agency. When this team acquired Alexander Semin and Jordan Staal I had extremely high hopes for the extended future. When I look at our roster I can't believe it's one of the worst in the NHL. Why can't all of these top notch players get it together and win? Because we have no consistency. Consistency is something Kirk Muller just never brought to this team. I hate to blame it all on him because not everything was his fault.. But, with that being said if he was worth a damn this team would've been winning consistently. No I don't think we had talent to be a permanent top 10 team but we should've been close. Thankfully Muller is gone. Now we live in the Bill Peters era, if he is anything close to a viable head coach he should be able to maintain stability and constancy. We didn't really do anything in free agency so I'm not expecting a huge turnaround but the talent is there to at least have a respectable season.

If not? Try and trade away our huge contracts and start a youth movement. Somethings gotta be done to move the franchise in the right direction.

What the fans are sick of is this franchise continuing to hug the nuts of it's declining players. For some reason, some players just stick around for way longer than they should. You should see the Canes FB page. They are still continuing to hype up Cam Ward like he is still our undisputed #1 goal tender.

Cam should've been gone two years ago.  Eric either plays like an All-Star or he is gone after this year.  His effort last season was so poor I was tired of driving to Raleigh to watch the guy play.  Seemed like his heart wasn't in it anymore.

If Peters makes it to the playoffs with this roster I'll buy every Canes on this forum a playoff ticket.

You do realize the Hurricanes have as much talent as almost any team in the league right?  The fact Muller couldn't take them to the playoffs is why his tenure was so brief.

The fourth line is horrid and outside of Gerbe our third line is pretty poor as well. Not to mention we really don't have another legit second line winger to play with Staal outside of Skinner (lLindholm is better suited for center).

Oh and out defense is atrocious except for Faulk, Sekera, and Hainsey.

It's the hockey version of the 2010 Panthers. Sure, the names looked good years ago but they aren't, and the organization's avoidance of the important positions needed to be a winner that haven't been consistent in years has come back to bite it. Furthermore, the cap situation is so dire, you have to tear it all down before you can build it back up.

I have to give credit to Kat on this one. For years I always saw Kat's posts about the organization as pessimistic for the sake of being pessimistic, but it turns out Kat was right about the direction this franchise was headed in the latter JR years. I used to be excited about the start of the Hurricanes season (hence why Kat's posts were always downers, ha) and maybe it's a proximity thing but now I am just indifferent. I have no expectations and no hope that promoting a guy from the exact same regime of the guy you just fired will turn things around.

I could always count on the Canes to be a consistent winner in the doldrums of those awful Panthers and Bobcats years. My how the times have changed.

I have followed the Canes since they've come to Raleigh.  I still have a lot to learn about the game but even I can see that there are some things that are very wrong with our organization.  The top line/Eric Staal discussion has been beaten to death but how much longer can we wait for him to get it together night in and night out?  I will say that I love watching Semin play.  The guy has skill for days and I am really glad that he's a Hurricane now.  My greatest frustration when watching the Hurricanes is that when you see them play a team like Pittsburgh, you can actually see that there is a entirely different level of hockey that we can't reach right now.

When I've tried to understand the source of our problems, usually I have read that it has to do with our development of players.  Our AHL team is ok, but who are we developing that can come up to the main team?  Justin Peters played pretty well even though he lost a lot last year.  I think a lot of goalies would have lost playing behind our squad.  Beyond that we don't have a lot for the future, although I have read that this years draft did the best they could to at least start to have some NHL level depth on the Checkers.

All I know is over the past few years I've tried to get others in on my love of the Hurricanes.  I get hype at the beginning of the year and I can even get some more eyeballs on the team, but by late December/January I don't have much to get people interested.  I will always be a fan no matter how bad things get because I'm so grateful for '06!  What I am looking for this year is something to get excited for for the future.  With all the talent that we have on our roster its a shame to have to say that but I would be ok if we could just show some signs of heading in the right direction.

    • It's actually interesting you mention Richardson because I've seen it suggested here Bryce will have 500 or more rushing yards and 5-10 rushing touchdowns this year. And if big Anthony Richardson can get hurt carrying the rock what's that tell you about the practicality of thinking Bryce won't?
    • I mean, I get why the media and some NFL and Carolina fans are saying that we don't have a real chance, but as many Huddlers should know, we won't know what we really have in this team until probably late September or early October at the earliest. And I'm not trying to be a homer, I'm just looking at things historically. Obviously I'm also looking at Bryce's "palatable" improvement the last half of last season (including being the catalyst for hanging with and nearly beating the Super Bowl participants), and the new additions that we've acquired overall. I'm also looking at the beginnings of a culture change--even if perceptibly subtle--to some degree indeed may take a foothold if things start falling the right way. But, overall, I'm still cognizant of the realization that things could just go south and that perhaps that Bryce could revert and flop, or that D & D (Dan and Dave) are not the answer, but I still am not ready to say "we're far away." Hell we could be close, albeit with growing pains, but even if we're on the course to bring legit in 2026, then guys like Ramsey would be welcome additions this season. That's just my take on it. I don't think we'll know that we're far away until some point in the season. If we can compete in the South...who knows?
    • You guys remember when the narrative on here was that Bryce would be chronically injured in the NFL due to his size and Anthony Richardson would be super durable due to his? You remember when the narrative was that Bryce was physically incapable of throwing a ball further than 20 yards in the NFL? You remember “I’ll stop complaining when he throws for more than 200 yards and looks like an NFL quarterback”? You remember when 60 sacks was his fault and not the offensive line, slow WRs, and terrible scheme? Pepperidge Farm remembers. It will always be something for some people. Whatever insanity they come up with will be quickly dropped to move on to the next thing. Bryce could have an MVP Super Bowl winning season and they would complain that we can’t run the tush push with him. It will always be something.
