Is Corvey Irvin behind Hayden AND Favorite for DT?

From Gantt's Camp Digest:

WHAT WE LEARNED

DT Damione Lewis has the safest job on the roster of anyone not named Delhomme.

Lewis got the veteran’s day off Thursday, leaving Nick Hayden and Marlon Favorite (and occasionally Corvey Irvin) to work with the starters. Suffice it to say, the run defense lacked a certain stoutness up the middle.

The longer this goes with the young kids on hand, the more I believe their opening day starter is on someone else’s roster right now. They almost have to make a trade or sift through the scraps for some help, because unless these kids get better fast, they don’t appear ready.

My question is, for anyone who have been present for some of the other practices recently, is this always the case? Has Irvin been behind them the whole time?

I love our draft for the most part... I knew Munnerlyn would be a steal and perhaps a career nickel/spot starter for his career... I love his game. Goodson has the potential to be a star for us in whatever role he's used in. Probably my favorite pick of our draft considering the scouting that went into it, and where he was picked at. Robinson and Fiammetta were well-worth the value and both potential starters, and very good ones at that. Brown could be a Pro Bowl-Caliber guy and was worth the first rounder we gave for him now in hindsight.

But my main questions were about Martin and Irvin. I didn't know much about either of them and had a lot of questions about them going into camp. Thus far, I haven't heard a whole lot about them in camp. Irvin concerns me more than Martin because DT is such a pivotal position for us right now with Kemo on IR and the lack of quality depth. How has he looked for those that have been there? I'm just not getting the feeling that he's going to do much for us...

In hindsight? What hindsight? They haven't even played in an NFL game yet... not sure we can make any indications on these guys until after the season....also not sure how you could label someone a possible Pro Bowler based on a week-and-a-half of training camp. Just sayin'.

the lack of depth at DT is going to cost us some games. Even if we grab a decent vet when cuts start we are still too thin......that cost us in a big game last year. We will be even thinner this year so it will probably cost us at least a couple games imo.

favorite was a highly regarded FA pickup. I agree that we need to pick up a vet in order to compete at that position. Beason is going to be severely limited if we don't bring in a someone who knows the ropes. Are there any available so-so vets we can get for a year cheap? It doesn't even need to be a highly regarded player imo

Could be a few reasons, first I'm thinking is either he's not adjusting as fast as hoped, or they're thinking of going lighter and faster and not trying to eat space in the middle.

Martin was a safety so we should've expected growing pains as he shifted to nickel. Munnerlyn is the front runner, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Martin start to claw some of that ground back fairly quickly, he's a superior specimen in all facets and it's really his inexperience at the position that's likely hurting him.

There will be some good candidates when the 75/53 roster cuts are made--particularly the latter. Watch for a guy named Daniel Muir, backup for the Colts right now but in danger of losing his spot to one of several rookies in camp. Meeks knows him and he'll know the system from the get-go. He's no Kemo but he can hold his own. There will be better players available but Muir might be the best "fit."

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
