Still working with 'Rudys'

Ron needs to learn that Rudy never saw the field except for one play in one game.

Hell, in real life, Ruettiger jumped off-sides and was immediately yanked before he could do any more damage. I hate how fake Hollywood is.

That is not correct.  Rudy played for 3 plays and did record a sack.

The season is not lost yet, but the Panthers better hope their 2014 'Rudy's' start getting it together.  So far, the 2013 secondary looked better than the 2014 secondary.  The Panthers have 4-new starters in the secondary after having the #2 defense last year. You have to believe that is one reason why Luke has not looked 'like Luke' the past 2-games.  He is probably over-compensating.  While their coverage skills were suspect, both Mitchell & Captain were under-rated as tacklers & run support.

However, the Panthers biggest oversight is still the O-Line.  They must have completely been surprised by Jordan Gross retirement but I don't see how they could have.  I also think they undervalued the Gross/Wharton combination on the left side of the line.

Let's hope the secondary, and the o-line start 'gelling' real fast.

I don't believe that Luke hasn't looked like Luke because of the DB's, I think it has more to do with the Dline play.  Our Defensive Backfield wasn't very good last year, but it didn't need to be because the strength of our team was our front 7 who got pressure constantly.  As much as I hate to admit it, we miss Hardy terribly because CJ has not taken back the role of the major disruptive force on the line and Cole has been getting pushed around like he's not there.  Because of that, Luke isn't free to roam sideline to sideline.  CJ HAS to step up or our defense is sunk.  He is the key to our defense getting turned around.

    • You're correct (on its face). But PFF does indeed use advanced stats to come up with their grades. Not trying to turn this into a debate about PFF (at all because it's been done ad nauseum), but here is how PFF explains it:   GRADES VS. STATS We aren’t grading players based on the yardage they rack up or the stats they collect. Statistics can be indicative of performance but don’t tell the whole story and can often lie badly. Quarterbacks can throw the ball straight to defenders but if the ball is dropped, you won't see it on the stat sheet. Conversely, they can dump the ball off on a sequence of screen passes and end up with a gaudy looking stat line if those skill position players do enough work after the catch. PFF grades the play, not its result, so the quarterback that throws the ball to defenders will be downgraded whether the defender catches the ball to notch the interception on the stat sheet or not. No amount of broken tackles and yards after the catch from a bubble screen will earn a quarterback a better grade, even though his passing stats may be getting padded. The same is true for most positions. Statistics can be misleading. A tackle whose quarterback gets the ball out of his hands quicker than anybody else may not give up many sacks, but he can still be beaten often and earn a poor grade. Receivers that are targeted relentlessly could post big-time numbers but may offer little more than the product of a volume-based aerial attack. https://www.pff.com/grades So PFF uses stats to come up with player grades and rankings.
