J.J. Watt or Luke Kuechly

Who would you rather have at this point in their careers?  One is considered the best defensive player in the NFL and the other is the reigning defensive player of the year.

I think Watt is the better player, but Luke is way harder to gameplan out of the game due to the position he plays. He is literally involved in every play.

With our lack of pass rush this season (thanks NFL) I honestly would take Watt at this point.  Luke is unbelievable, but our defense is predicated on getting to the QB, and we have not done that this year.

I didn't know we were trying to fit a scheme here...

I thought it was a roundabout way of asking who's better right now.

And even if scheme mattered it's not like j.j. Watt wouldn't be able to function in a 4-3.

Watt is a game changer, he's an athletic freak and probably the best defensive player in the league right now.

 

Having said that, I will take Luke and I have a non homer reason as to why.

 

 

With Watt, if you have an average to above average defense on the field with him, there is only so much he can do playing from one side of the field.  Teams can game plan away from him.

 

With Luke, if you have an average to above average defense on the field with him, he's in the middle and can get all over everywhere (like he does) from rushing the passer, picking up screens, covering guys in the middle and just being an all-around badass. 

 

So what I'm saying is I'd rather have an elite MLB than an elite DE if I had to make that choice.

Luke successfully directs the entire defense, and that is very hard to quantify and value. I'd take Luke, but Watt is an absolute beast right now.
