Newton vs. Dalton: the raw numbers

Since both of these guys came into the league at the same time, I thought a comparison of their overall production would be fun. Here it is:

Newton             52                59.9                12,282     7.7      69        4.3       43       2.7       87.1     7            7

But, of course, Newton has a tremendous edge in mobility so let's add in their rushing stats for a total offense, total touchdown comparison:

 

                    Total yards       Total Touchdowns    Total Offense per game    Total Touchdowns per game

Newton           14,356               97                             276                                     1.9    

Dalton             12,769               92                             246                                     1.8    

 

The mobile Newton has a clear edge, though it is probably not as great as most people would assume. Also, a scrambling Quarterback is not an unmixed blessing. While Newton has been sacked 125 times to Dalton's 100, he has also LOST 937 yards on those sacks, compared to 579 yards for Dalton. In any event, those numbers were not included, though for a more honest appraisal, they probably should have been.

       

 

And for this year (both have played 4 games):

Personally, I am looking forward to seeing what Dalton can do with A.J. Green on the bench, although Green has not been his dominant self this year. As a matter of fact, Panthers rookie Kelvin Benjamin has been arguably just as effective this season with Green averaging 78 yards a game and Benjamin 73 yards per game. 

 

I say the Panthers find a way to run a little on a suddenly suspect Bengal defense, get just enough pressure to make Dalton uncomfortable and pull out a 20-17 upset on the road.

Dalton is ok  but in the end he seems to lose composure at crunch time. that is just my perception.

QB's don't work in a vacum. Part of their success comes from those around them. I think the question should be posted like this:

 

Would you rather have:

 

Dalton with Carolina receivers Smith and LaFell (9 TD's between them last year)

 

OR

 

Newton with Cincinnati receivers Green and Jones (21 TD's)

 

So tell me now who you would feel better building a team around.

Cam's PR is 94.6 this year, and how does last week not count as a 4QC and GWD?

 

I took the numbers from Pro-Football reference.

 

My apologies for Newton's PR this year, I read the wrong line as I was typing the info. I have edited the OP.

 

As far as the 4QC and GWD's are concerned, I am sticking with the original numbers.

 

Frankly I am not sure how that stat is computed. It possibly might have something to do with length of drives or something. I really don't know.

Good grief. I never said or even insinuated Dalton was better than Newton.

 

I just laid out the actual stats of the two QB's heading into tomorrow's match-up.

 

Of course nothing happens in a vacuum. You can spin the numbers anyway you like.

 

If I compared the two defenses would you guys be wetting your pants over it ???

Just like the newton luck debate there is different variables. Dalton not only has had the best WR/TE duo of the bunch he has had just as good a run game and defense of the bunch added on top of two of the best OCs of the bunch. He is in a perfect situation for him where Newton and Luck sometimes have less support.

      Me, I'm sick of WWE channel hopping their PLEs and shows. Netflix now with Raw. USA still has Smackdown but you can't get it with Roku if you don't also have cable. Then they went from all the PLEs on Peacock to ESPN+ which required upgrading your Disney+ package. Then they frikkin' move Saturday Night Main Event with John Cena's retirement match back over to frikkin' Peacock, which we'd just cancelled two months prior because no PLEs there anymore. And there are fewer, but longer matches and its the same danged stories again and again. Rematch after rematch after rematch between PLEs. Fewer matches, fewer wrestlers, more promos (of lesser quality) and less action.  It just seems like it's all fillers and re-runs. I'm tired of Cody Rhodes. I'm tired of Jey Uso. I'm tired of the two Brons. Shuffle the deck a bit guys, this game's getting stale.

      Chuba was 3 yards behind the 3 gap. He was lined up weak offset I. It was a 33 dive. Chuba needed to power through off of Ekwonu's block and slip off into the 5 gap where the Tremble had the lane sealed and Rick pulled the LB out of the 5 gap. Here's a visual if you need proof. Chuba did a jump cut laterally to the 2 gap on the right side with unblocked defenders crashing down and went airborne.   This is a 33 dive that should have been slipped off the block into the 5 gap. Chuba lacked vision, but you can see Rico and Bryce staring at the intended running lane sealed off by Tremble and Ekwonu. He should have read Ekwonu's block. The blocking and misdirection is NOT set up for the right side. The play worked. Chuba failed to execute on this play. Trust who you want to, but I wouldn't suggest you argue with the video. Anyone telling you this was drawn up to go right with the blocking did not analyze it. They are correct it should have been a called dive, and it was a called dive.  This was a weak offset I bringing Tremble in motion from the right to the left.
