that was the post-Civil War retcon that removed the reveal of his true identity at the cost of any/all previous relationships/marriage with MJ

Thought so.

A lot of Spider Man fans would be willing to deal with the devil if they could make it so Joe Quesada never existed.

i would imagine that the movie would have to have some kind of crossover potential with GotG or some of the earth-bound characters somehow. but, post-Avengers, Hulk is the one character that's come across really well. fans enjoy the character, comic-readers and non-comic-readers alike

personally, I think it would just be like the two that have already come out... decent numbers, nothing earth shattering and leaving Marvel wondering if it's worth making another. but, while all of that is happening, Marvel's still raking in cash on all of the other movies, fanboys get the movie they're dying for and Mark Ruffalo gets to feel like he's worthy of a staring role, which will probably do wonders for convincing him to extend his contract

OR...

what if Thanos finds Hulk on Sakaar a crazed lunatic, destroys Sakaar but saves Hulk and HE'S the one that brings him back to earth.

plenty of options when you're willing to tweak the source material to work for the big-screen

I was going to say something similar to the second part. Perhaps the bad guys shoot Hulk into space and not Illuminate, but also trick him into believing it was Stark. A crossover with GotG might work and help juice the box office. Just replace the Warbound with GotG.

But Planet Hulk is so good on its own I hate for Hollywood to start changing things up because you will end up with something like Star Lord being ruler of Sakaar, and Hulk takes back seat because he isn't as marketable, instead of establishing Hulk as the badass conquerer of worlds.

If they do a crossover that is a delicate line they have to walk

i don't think it would have to be changed too drastically... have the Red King all of a sudden be a holder of one of the infinity gems (hence the power and ability to now hold gladiatorial fights on his planet). this will pull Thanos into the mix as he's trying to collect them all and also piques the interest of GotG. maybe change some of the Warbound around to be characters that may be introduced later on - have Thanos take the ring from Red King and destroy Sakaar. as the planets being destroyed, have GotG show up (either in pursuit of Thanos or the infinity gem) and save Hulk and the Warbound and then as the planet is destroyed they speed off after Thanos - which leads them on a course to earth

that brings Hulk (and whatever characters get thrown in as the Warbound), Thanos and GotG all back toward earth for a huge team-up with the Avengers to send Thanos packing.

Hell... a lot of that could even be post-credits after Hulk does his whole gladiator movie on his own two legs, introducing more galactic-ish characters along the way. Adam Warlock, Moondragon, Super Skrull, Mantis... all characters that tie in with GotG, which will be a bigger pull for the rest of the Marvel fans than randoms from the original Planet Hulk/WWH stories that didn't lead to as much or have as much of an impact on where the MCU is now headed

I'm all for the Hulk stand alone movie...

But will the casual movie goer be? I mean, Mark Ruffalo doesn't sell tickets, throw in a Hulk story line that only comic fans know of,  and is that going to make a ton of money? I don't know. In ways, the same can kind of be said for Guardians...but it had bigger names than Ruffalo.

I think enough casual fans know about the hulk for him to carry a solo movie.

Even if he doesn't the Marvel name will bring in enough box office. The only thing I really see stopping marvel is if people get superhero fatigue with all these studios now wanting a huge shared universe for their comic films including a lot of spinoff films.

That makes sense too.

Again, I am a Hulk fanboy and have been since Lou Ferrigno and Bill Bixby were on my television in my early childhood, so I always want Hulk to be a BAMF

My fear is that the studios will look at past box offices, decide Hulk can't carry a movie, and basically incorporate Planet Hulk in GotG 2, thus Hulk being generally a secondary character.  Instead , as I said before, establishing him as the conqueror of worlds.

But if they do indeed do it the way you suggest, establishing Hulk's rule is no longer necessary, and you take out his desire for revenge on Earth he can come back as the savior of Earth (along with the GotG), instead of doing the WWH storyline.

I like the way it is in the comics, but from a money standpoint, your ideas are probably the safe play.  Keeps heroes heroes, Stark is probably biggest star in Marvel Movie universe, so if they do Civil War, I find it hard to believe they will turn Stark completely heel.

If they do go this route, it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out on screen
