  1. 1. Should Gettleman be fired?

how about the mental gymnastics required to think that steve was worth his 2015 and 2016 cap hits if he would have still been on this team

Isn't he still hitting us for like $5M next year?

I'm talking about the thought process that goes onto saying he has been coasting for two years and is washed up.

We all knew he wasn't washed up. But you can't deny from watching that poo the past two years that he wasn't playing 150% and that he does not have the speed and agility that he used to. Him getting cut fueled him to play as well as he is this year. You think if we kept him and drafted KB still to be the #1 that he'd have these numbers? He'd be hindering KB's development while being merely mediocre. And then we'd have him for 2 more years as well with absurd cap hits for those 2 seasons.

$5 million as opposed to being on the hook for $20 million+ when the non-voidable years kick in is a bargain

i don't even bother with the second part.  the only people who know for sure are the coaches and panthers brass and the best anyone on this site other than maybe jeremy can do is pretend they know what they're talking about.

i think his release was more than justifiable based on his cap figure alone.  nobody even needs to bother with the "washed up" or "he would've been damaging to the young guys" angles.

Would his cap hit really have been $20M? I have no idea.

That's fine. We were going to part ways eventually and G-Man made a call. It's debatable whether we could have used Smith this year. I think we could but who knows. Maybe he is to caustic.

But we could have been nicer. Dude is the best player we have ever had maybe.

But hey it's a business.

we have hurney robbing peter to pay paul via the extension smith signed in 2012 to thank for that.  we would have paid him $14 million between 2014 and 2015 if he would have been on the roster with a minimum of $6 million owed next season even if he retired like he said he would.  if he made it to 2016 he would have been paid a combined $23 million between 2014, 2015, and 2016.  gettleman couldn't have really pulled any accounting tricks to help that either-his contract was already leveraged all to hell and he would have had to take a straight up pay cut to get his cap number down.  the panthers would have almost no leverage in that situation either because if he retired or banged enough pots and pans and got released we'd have to pay him anyway.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
