2015 Huddle mock offseason rules/ offense and specialist FA pool

Recommended Posts

Hope everyone has been doing their homework, and research on their teams. Figuring out what FA prospects and draft guys you want to add to make that playoff push. Depth Charts should be up and completed by February 2, @ 8:00 pm EST in the depth chart thread.

During this time each team has the option of designating a franchise tag on one of their own free agents they wish to keep for the $ amount for that position. You must state who you will use the franchise tag on before February 4th @ 8:00 pm EST time in the appropriate FA thread. (If I am tagging a WR I need to say so in the offense FA thread.) If you do decide to use the franchise tag on someone, your cap will reflect the move and the next best free agent will enter the pool. Every team will have at least 5 players in the FA pool.

Then the free agency period will begin. The start of FA period will be at 12:00 pm EST time on February 6th. Each team will have a cap space figure to stay within. You simply bid on free agents you want and the highest bidder adds that player to their team. You can sign multiple free agents but you have to remain within your cap space. During the free agency period teams can also trade draft picks for players on other teams by negotiating a deal with another GM. Please do not put any FA in the pool on your team until you won the bid for that player.

Free agency period will go into the draft( FA will be over after the draft.) The draft will start on February 26th @ 7:00 pm EST. (That is the thursday after the combine) Player trades will be allowed during the draft, and FA pick ups. You may trade up or down using draft picks and whenever your team is on the clock choose who to pick.

Free Agency Rules

Free agency and player trading will commence on Friday, February 6th 12:00 pm EST. FA officially ends @ the end of the draft. The draft will begin February 26th @ 7:00 pm EST

The top five URFAs from each team will enter the free agent pool. All other FAs will stay with their original team and you can treat these players just like anyone else under contract. You may also not put those guys on your depth chart if you want. RFA's will remain with the current team they are with, but can be traded away. I will look at overthecap.com, spotrac.com, and walterfootball.com to decide each team top 5 FAs to put into the FA pool. Position, age, and productivity will play a role into the decision.

If your team is currently over the cap, you cannot participate in any free agency bidding. If you would like to participate in free agency, you must first make cuts to your team. Making cuts does free up some money for your team, but you will still be responsible for an amount of that players cap hit for the 2015 year. Cutting rules are later in this thread.

Franchise Tag

Each team will be able to franchise one of their free agents. This will cost a set amount based on position and will count towards that teams cap. The deadline for designating a franchise tag will be 8:00pm EST on Wednesday, February 4th. Please post who you wish to franchise tag in the appropriate FA Offense or Defense thread.

QB- $18

RB- $11

Cutting players

Each team will be allowed to cut up to 5 players on their roster to create some cap room. Deadline to cut a player is the same as the tag which is Feb, 4th @ 8:00 pm EST.Catch-22 is your player that gets cut now enters the FA pool (which bumps your 5 fa to 10 at most), and you are still on the hook for a % of that player 2015 cap hit based off years left on the contract. 1 year= 20%, 2 years= 30%, 3 years= 40%, 4 years= 50%, and 5+ years= 60%.

EX. Charles Johnson got $20 cap hit for 2015, with 2 years remaining on his contract. If I cut CJ, I would still be on the hook for $6, and would save $14.

Cap Space

At no time can your total outstanding bids be higher than the amount you have to spend! This is up to you and you only to keep track of. If you exceed your spending limit you will be penalized, your total cap space reduced by $10.

Bidding on players in FA

Players are signed 1 day (exactly 24 hours) from the time of the highest bid. For example, if your high bid was posted on Sunday 1PM the player will officially be signed and added to your roster Monday 1PM so long as nobody outbids you during that 1 day. If someone outbids you, then the day waiting period starts again from the time of their top bid. This 1 day waiting period may be reduced to 12 hours or less toward the end of the free agency period.

Home Team Advantage

Teams resigning their own free agents will have a couple advantages. First, they can simply match the top offer rather than having to outbid( When matching a offer please put the $ amount as well). Second, they will get a discount off the final price after the player is officially signed. The discount will be applied as followed:

Final bid: $3-$6 = $1 discount.
Final bid: $7-$10 = $2 discount.
Final bid: $11-$14 = $3 discount.
Final bid: $15+ = $4 discount.

If somebody is a FA and appears in the pool, please take them off our depth chart until you win the bid for that player. Again, we will use a combo of walterfootball.com, spotrac.com, and overthecap.com to determine the top 5 FAs from each team.

Team Cap Space

The projected ceiling is around $140-$144.The ceiling will be $140 for this. We are rolling over cap space from 2014 to increase the spending. Below are the teams and the cap space money. These numbers are from overthecap.com.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have cut Kicker Shawn Suisham

Suisham->12.575(4Years Remaining)->$6.288 Savings

math is off. remember its a percentage of what that player is owed for 2015.his cap hit  in 2015 is $4. he has 4 years left on his deal, so you owe him 50% of his 2015 cap hit.

DCK,

How would cutting a player who isn't under contract in 2015, but is on my roster for our Offseason because he isn't a top five FA work? For instance, if I wanted to cut Wes Welker what would his cap # be to determine the cut, and I'm assuming I would just use the 20% for one year remaining? Would I use 2014 cap too?

he is a FA, so you would not have to cut him. remember we only used the top 5 FA from each team, i think he may retire anyways. FA not in the pool, you can keep on your roster, or just not put them on there.

    • Yeah, if we could make it work, you sign him. All this talk about being a just above average QB is crazy. Dak is a top 10 QB, and his stats prove it. Give him a line and weapons, which we presumably have, and he'll be very good. I'm not going to ding a guy just because he's playing behind a good line and has a good wide receiver (as Dallas does). Dak is highly productive, and gives his team a good look every year.
    • I think Prescott is overrated as well. He is a lot better than anything we have. But it is so much money, I’d just steer clear.  I go withg what Frankw was saying, we need to keep plucking guys with potential from the draft board and cut down lists and one will hit.
