part-time work ideas

so grad school and a kid have turned out to be very expensive enterprises when combined together, especially in conjunction with financial goals that add up to more than just breaking even every month. i've got a really ambitious budget that involves putting away a substantial amount per month. and for various reasons that's simply not getting done. some of it's frivolous spending, some of it's unavoidable bills (our new insurance is absolute garbage and two quick doctors visits landed us $300 in out-of-pocket medical expenses just like that.)

i've been debating picking up some part-time work on the side to try to plug up some of the holes and cover expenses that keep popping up. anybody have thoughts on flexible options? i've tossed around everything from contracting with uber to seeing if i can land a gig bartending in charlotte a night or two a week when i'm down there, or getting on a lunch shift somewhere.

i've been slowly re-watching breaking bad too, so i'm also open to doing shady stuff.

I have taken uber many times and you'd be surprised by the people who are driving.

I was talking to the guy driving us home from the airport and he does it a couple nights a week because he son is on atraveling baseball team and needs the extra money.

If you want bartending...talk to roaring riot :)

2009 mini cooper clubman. slick ride, if the app lets you see what your options for car type it might work in my favor

The app does not but you can also get regular clients.

I have the choice between Uberx (reg car) UberXL (suv)and Uber Black (black car). Based on the location of the customer it gets routed to the closest car. They can accept or reject it and then it rolls over to the next closest and so on. (dont reject too many)

No one is going to want to get in the back of a mini. No offense. It may even have to be a sedan to qualify

quite possibly, i'll have to do the research and see. it's a clubman, not the regular, so it's got an extra foot and a half of room, which makes a massive difference in legroom and storage capacity.

edit: uber requires four-door cars, mine is 2… so that's out

Why is your new insurance "absolute garbage"?

to be honest i'm not even sure… my wife recently went to part-time at work because she's in grad school too, and it completely changed the insurance options. we pay for it monthly now instead of having it drafted from her paycheck through work. i haven't checked all the details, i just know the premiums are ungodly.

    • In your opinion. What do you think Moton's true value in contract, dollars and guarantees? If we had not extended him, what is your plan for RT in 27 and 28? How important are good offensive linemen for our current offense? How much value do you put on protecting Bryce at this stage of his career? How difficult in general do you think finding above average tackles in the NFL is?
    • The Falcons have 2 significant offensive line injuries to start the 2025 season. Right tackle Kaleb Mcgary (who is the blindside protector for Penix since he is left-handed) is going to miss significant time, and it's looking more like it may be all season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-expect-kaleb-mcgary-to-miss-significant-time https://x.com/BKsquared7/status/1959285822236107013. Also, the top backup and swing tackle, Storm Norton (cool name BTW) is having ankle surgery and may miss half the season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-ot-storm-norton-out-6-8-weeks-after-ankle-surgery I don't root for injuries, but its also hard to be too sympathetic given how badly injuries have hit us in recent years. We definitely need to get that W in week 3 for our home opener at BOA. Despite our collective frustration at not being able to attend TC and then having boring preseason games, ultimately the most important objective of the preseason is to enter Week1 healthy, and we have at least done that. Hopefully the depth we think we have at Oline either shines through or isn't needed. Many other teams are in a bad spot with their offensive lines before the season even starts. For once, we aren't in that situation.
    • That roster was billed as a super smart and strong unit for a young QB….until he sucked though.   it didn’t have superstars but it had proven vets that checked well all the safe boxes and it was universally agreed the Panthers were putting him into position to succeed. BY just doesn’t fit a traditional O because he isn’t built like a traditional QB.  And he still doesn’t.   CJ Stroud would have had more success here than Bryce with that cast.   CJ just has the tools that fit the NFL more easily.  Young can find success but I have always argued it would take a Bryce centric plan (which we have never attempted IMO)
