Compensatory picks and the long game

For all of the amateur GMs out there, any FA signed after June 1 is not included in the compensatory pick calculation regardless of rather they were released or their contract was up. If Hardy is not signed by this time, we will get NO compensation for him. Any FAs we signed last year after June 1 will not be held against us in this years calculation. There are ALWAYS 32 picks given out each year, so in effect, the draft is really eight rounds instead of seven.

So they don't release it...

With 25% of the teams getting 90% of the comp picks every yr (the same teams) it seems like they do have it figured out (the formula that is). So why doesn't everyone do it? I think it's mainly because the teams that do get the picks are stable and are able to worry about the "bonus" comp picks by gaming the system every yr and are not in a fix it now or you're fired mode.

That's not to say that everyone else is scrambling and these teams are calmly playing it cool and able to think of the long game but that their team stability and job stability is relatively secure and they can afford to factor comp picks somewhat into their decision making. Drafting well is a requirement though.

The good news I see is that it seems like we are making progress towards becoming one of those teams. Maybe not so much this year and maybe not next. But soon. And for the rest of our lives. (if anyone under 30 gets that reference you can have a naked photo of SCP)
