Cam Newtons Development makes him worth a New Contract

Recommended Posts

The Carolina Panthers are approaching a critical moment in their history.

Current starting quarterback Cam Newton is entering his fifth season in the NFL. His rookie contract lasts just one more season and he has yet to agree to an extension with the franchise. The quarterback market is as volatile as it has ever been right now, so signing any quarterback to a long-term deal is a huge commitment.

A few teams have been able to avoid that commitment by structuring deals in specific ways, but Newton has apparently refused to entertain the idea of signing a deal like Andy Dalton's or Colin Kaepernick's.

Newton wants guaranteed money and a real commitment to his future from the Panthers. He wants a real contract, not one that the team can get out of easily. The Panthers appear willing to give him one also, but both sides are seemingly content to let Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson set the market.

In terms of team success and reputation, Newton isn't on par with Luck or Wilson. The Panthers will feel like they can make a compelling argument against Newton as the best young quarterback in the NFL. Yet, they shouldn't.

The now 26-year-old quarterback is worthy of a huge contract. He is worthy of being spoken about in ways that Wilson and Luck are. Recently, Newton himself was selling his own talent publicly.

"I say this with the most humility, but I don't think nobody has ever been who I'm trying to be. Nobody has the size, nobody has the speed, nobody has the arm strength, nobody had the intangibles that I've had. I'm not saying that to say I'm a one-on-one type of person that this league will never see another. No, I'm not saying that. Hear me out. I'm just saying that so much of my talents have not been seen in one person."

Arrogance is a trait that the media as a whole is selective with in terms of how they receive it. Some players or coaches are praised for their arrogance, others are overly scrutinized for theirs. Newton generally falls into the latter group.

Even as he suggests that he is speaking with humility, there is no doubt that Newton is showing off arrogance with his statements. That's really not important though. What's important is what he''s saying is hard to argue.

Newton does possess a unique skill set.

One of the best Bleacher Report articles I've ever read. Breaks down Cams plays from the pocket and everything.

This thread definitely needs to stay bumped up for a while. That article clearly shows what many of us know but what many more fail to see. That Cam is improving but the offense around him was getting worse. Hopefully that changes this year...

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
