Newton starts a series on how Panthers spend money

position by position.  started today with special teams.

not much in there, but I'll take anything in July.

From the acticle..

The Panthers have spent wisely here. Graham Gano is tied up through the 2017 season. His 2015 cap number ranks ninth in the NFL among kickers, which is about where he should be based on productivity the past three years. With the extra-point distance moved from the 2- to the 15-yard line, Gano becomes even more valuable because of his accuracy from the 32-to-33-yard-line where that PAT will be kicked. Carolina will have to deal with punter Brad Nortman and deep snapper J.J. Jansen after this season as both contracts expire. Nortman’s 2015 cap number ranks No. 24 among punters, which is a bargain considering in 2013 he set team records for gross and net average, and last year he still remained in the upper half of the league in gross and net average.

For about half a second, I was wondering why Cam Newton would be writing about the Panthers spending habits.

Interesting series though.  One thing that has definitely improved under the new admin is cap and spending management.  Hopefully, that leads to consistently successful performance over the next several years.

gotta say, I'm looking at our roster and our draft needs for next year, and it's amazing how different it appears from just 2 years ago.  If our draft picks perform, we're looking at just needing a long term LT, 2 DT's for rotating, and a CB and safety.  If we can use last season's strategy of moving up in the draft to get quality instead of quantity, we could be in an incredible position come draft time.  Such a better roster in only a couple of years.  Give that Getty a raise.

the Mayo pick is still a head scratcher though.

    • Burns quit on his team, full stop. Burns was and continues to be a liability in the run.    JC has never looked this bad before the concussion. He always was a very solid tackler, from what I remember.  I’ll take the overall body of his work over his current down stretch. I’ve never had to question his heart. The FO has royally screwed up roster management in many other deals but retaining Horn continues to be the right move. He will be back to form next season.
    • I get it. I was making a joke that we have zero chance of winning.
    • Did Bryce play bad? Yes. Did the whole offense play bad? Yes.  Was Canales bad with his playcalling? Yes. Now with that being said I don't put this loss solely on Bryce Young. The seahawks are a much more talented team than us and to win in a scenario like that you need some luck which we didn't have that day.  Bryce has shown this year that you can win with him at QB but the problem is that he doesn't have the ability to elevate the rest of the team around him. Bryce was a number 1 overall pick who we traded a haul of assets to get going into the end of his 3rd year the expectations need to be much higher than 54 yards passing.  It's been nice to get some wins this year and have a chance to make the playoffs and Bryce has played a part in that but at some point the front office needs to see that you can't keep giving Bryce a pass for these low production games.
