Charley Casserly has been with the Carolina Panthers, and is high on rookie Devin Funchess. Casserly's sleeper from Carolina camp is fifth-round pick Cameron Artis-Payne: "Right now, to me, he's the second-best back on this roster behind a healthy Jonathan Stewart."

Piss on what Charlie thinks.  Let him go hang out with teams he doesn't dog every time he opens his mouth.  We know Funch and Cameron are about it.

Seriously. I forget the specifics, but I seem to remember Casserly talking poo on us in years past.

Panthers.com caught up him to discuss his thoughts on the team, starting with what Carolina needs to do to win a third consecutive NFC South title.

"One of the keys will be left tackle. If Michael Ohericon-article-link.gif can come through and solidify that position, the rest of that offensive line is solid – in fact, the inside is really good. Oher didn't practice today, but a number of people have told me that he's been having a good camp.

"The second thing is the secondary being able to contain and keep things in front of them, not give up big plays. Josh Normanicon-article-link.gif is a good player, but the rest of the group as far as speed – especially at the safety position – is something to watch. Now you might be able to scheme your way through that with coverages, and there are a number of teams that do that. The front seven should be pretty good."

What about the wide receiver position, which has undergone a major overhaul over the last two offseasons?

"You've got to be excited here. (Kelvin) Benjamin had a terrific year last year. I think he looks better right here in his route running, which is something he had to improve from college where they didn't ask him to run a lot of routes. He's a big target who makes plays. (Rookie Devin) Funchess impresses you with his fluidness and athletic ability. You've also got a lot of flexibility there – you can play him in the slot, play him outside, move him around."

      I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.

      Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.

      Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
