Special Teams

They still suck.  Ginn had poor blocking for returns most of the day and the blocked field goal reminds me of last seasons play.  So we brought in all these guys and the special teams still blow - whose fault is it ?

Aside form the blocked kick (which is bad) I thought it was improved. What was our average starting field position? It seemed like we had the advantage all day in that department. I know that's perhaps oversimplified but overall I was satisfied.

It's only one game.  It wasn't necessarily good,  but wasn't horrible either (which is an improvement).

Punt Return is better than last year.

Could the blocked field goal be as a result of Daryl Williams getting injuried? How much time does the second string special teams subs get? It looks the defender came through on the right side.

I think we're seeing a difference in importance of the special teams between Rivera's coaching style and Fox's. Fox put a lot of emphasis on special teams and their contribution to the game, perhaps a bit too much at times. Rivera seems to take the more traditional approach that special teams are sort of a necessary evil... you've got to have them, but get 'em on and off the field as fast as possible so real football can be played.

Every coach wants his special teams to do well, but a lot of them don't stay up all night worrying about it. Two teams that do, the Rams and the Seahawks went to overtime yesterday and one lost it by trying to be too special on special teams.
