Mike Shula - update for the haters

CRA

Recommended Posts

CRA has ALWAYS been a contrarian. No hate though, at least he's consistent and been here with us through even the worst times. I almost miss the days before the Carolina Bandwagon was a thing.

it really is good for conversation.  I just think a message board serves a certain function.  Some disagree with how I view it.

if anyone watched a game with me I would just be an over the top annoying homer

One thing that irks me in general with Shula is that we don't have a developed short passing game. You see the way the Patriots use it to move the chains and so do the Packers, because sometimes, you can't run and you can't get the coverage you're looking for downfield for those deep throws. I'm not saying let's switch to WCO and get away from Newton's strengths, but we should be nurturing it more and more instead of settling for 3 and outs when our 2 dimensions are guarded well. We do have Newton's legs but that only becomes so effective up to a certain point and if the defense had to account for the running game, his arm strength, his legs, and his short passing precision everyone on offense will be more productive.

Shula runs the type of game that Rivera wants.

Shula is awful, has been for decades, and we would be much better without him.

much better means what?  B/c all we do is when with Shula as OC.....and we have one of the weaker offensive casts in the NFL.

It is about meshing.  Shula would be horrible for a HC who didn't care about defense and wanted to win on offense.

said it before in prior seasons, Shula actually helps our D play great.   So if you are a defensive HC and a good one....Shula ball is a good compliment.

entertaining? That is different.  A lot of bad OCs can provide more explosive plays and fun stuff to watch.    So can good ones. Shula ain't trying to wow...and I get some people want that.

same here, you just need to come around on Norman.

well that gets into a lot of stuff.  People think I am against him.  Which isn't true.   I just look forward to bigger tests from him....and hopefully he plays the same.   We will need him too.

On Greg Olsenicon-article-link.gif’s game-winning touchdown: "We got the coverage I think that Mike (Shula) was looking for, that was a seam route by Greg. He was able to get into the seam and the safeties were split. He was able to get in that sweet area. I thought it was a heck of a throw."

lol wait Mike Shula was looking for blown coverage?

If you watched the Seahawks game last week, Eifert torched them multiple times on a seam route. So yes, Shula was looking for blown coverage, and he got it. It's been a consistent issue for Seattle.

Rivera wants an offense that goes three and out on half the drives?

Rivera wants an offense that can grind out long 80 yard drives.  Shula did it 4 times in Seattle.

also, we don't go 3 and out b/c of just play calls.  Players screw it up too.  I mean if you dump a ball to Ed Dickson and he has an open field in front of him and he drops it.  THAT isn't Shula.  If Cam is drilling Funchess in the hands and repeatedly drops it...that ain't Shula.  If the offense has it picked....that ain't Shula (twice yesterday).  One of those INT balls was a dialed up TD call.  RT failed.  Cam failed on another.

That is the "Shula hate".  Offense left a lot on the field yesterday b/c the playcalls were there.

Outside of the 4th and 1 call.  Shula did great.  And great OC screw up calls in just about every game too.

this isn't Shula hate, but this problem with sustaining drives didn't just start yesterday. It's one thing to say we went 3 and out because some guy dropped a catchable ball but you can't expect me to believe the players just didn't execute every single time we went 3 and out with just how mental this game is and how really good offensive coordinators live off of creating mismatches and good play design even if the skill level of their weapons are less than stellar, and it's not just us.

Green Bay, as good as they are on offense had way too many 3 and outs in their game last night as well, and instead of writing it off as "Tom Clements runs the offense that Mike McCarthy wants" they're going to look at the tape and see what went wrong so that they don't have to rely on their defense to hold a one score lead all the time because that's a bad habit if you want to win every week.

Besides, the panthers didn't look like they were playing for TOP those last two 80 yard drives that were less than ten plays a piece so I don't know exactly what point you're trying to make, but if it is that the Panthers try to make every touchdown drive take ten minutes off the clock then that's a poor observation. Doesn't look at all like they do as much as you're leading on, and they shouldn't. They should know when it's a good idea to play ball control and when it's not.
