Opposing Gameplans Will Stop D-Lo? I don't think so...

I'm truly tired of hearing many people coming on the forums and saying how Deangelo will have an off year because all teams will be gameplanning to stop him. This is a stupid statement because he showed that even when all eyes were on him, he couldn't be stopped.

After the Tampa Bay, MNF game, there was just as much attention on Deangelo Williams as ever. Surely he would be held to few yards the rest of the season, correct? No, completely wrong. Here are his stats before and after the Bucs game.

Before:

12 Games

79.6 YDs per game

4.95 AVG

1.1 TDs per game

Opp. Rush Def. Rank - 21.3

After:

3 Games

124.7 YDs per game*

6.13 AVG*

1.7 TDs per game*

Opp. Rush Def. Rank - 17.7*

* = Improved

Conclusion - So although the avg. rush defense Deangelo played was better over the last 3 games, he was more successful. I am sure that if teams will be keying on him this year, they must have keyed on him towards the end of last year.

He averaged more yards per carry, per game and more touchdowns per game. This should prove to all of you that Deangelo is only improving and defense WILL NOT be able to catch up to him.

If you're referring to a comment I made in the other thread, I was merely stating that teams would gameplan more against him -- not that they would necessarily succeed in that gameplan. :)

I think DeAngelo will just continue to improve.

Yeah, I wasn't aiming this thread at you or any specific person, but I was aiming at a broad range of people.

Steve Smith sat on the roster for two years before having his breakout success.

Season Team G Rec Yds Y/G Avg Lng YAC 1stD TD

2001-02 Carolina 15 10 154 10.3 15.4 33 7.1 8 0

2002-03 Carolina 15 54 872 58.1 16.1 69 6.7 33 3

2003-04 Carolina 16 88 1110 69.4 12.6 67 6.3 48 7

Completely ignoring the following year because he was injured and I am not about to make that comparison, every year following his breakout success has been a 1000+ yard season.

Gameplans don't shut down elite players, they just make them look more spectacular.

    • Not sure about reporters, but fans do that all the time. Hell, if you were to ask some people on here, Cam Newton never had a single bad game in his entire career. Regardless of whether it's Young, Newton, Delhomme, Clausen, Teddy Bridgewater or even Matt Moore, It's never "everybody else's fault" anymore than it's ever all one person's fault. Young's performance this past Sunday was not good enough, but he had plenty of help.
    • 1st pick was a panic we need a WR for Bryce type of pick - they chose the wrong one. 2nd pick was inexcusable because RB was the one position we didn't desperately need I get the Wallace pick - dude has great athleticism for the LB position. Just has zilcho instincts 4th and 5th round picks look good to me Could care less about 6th and 7th round because those are usually special teamers at best caliber players. Plus we got Coker as a UDFA to negate them.   Overall probably a bad draft because of the 1st 2 picks + Wallace looking bad (granted, I think Brooks would have been a good RB if he could stay healthy). I do think Dan did a good job in the 2025 draft though.
    • "on pace" after one game is kinda silly. Derrick Henry is on pace for over 3000 yards rushing and 17 fumbles.  doesn't really matter though. Defenses are going to take Tet away and make Renfrow and XL beat them. He'll get tons of garbage time crossing routes for ten yards though. Hopefully he avoids the Bryce young hospital balls.
