Great Stats: Every team that's gone 10-0 or better

You know, it's really interesting to me that until recently, I'd forgotten that the 1991 Redskins also started 11-0 on their way to winning the Superbowl that season.

I followed the Skins avidly from 1987 - 1992 while I lived in the D.C. area before beginning my career overseas.  It's the last time I've cared about football until falling in love with the Panthers over the past two - three seasons...

So all of a sudden, I'm having this incredible sense of deja-vu.

But of course, the Panthers are gonna go 16-0.  None of this 14-2 nonsense!

[Fortunately, we're already ahead of the 1991 Skins in one aspect:  their first lost was to Dallas, to give them an 11-1 record.  Phew.  Glad we beat Dallas to get to 11-0]

Here's the Wikipedia blurb on the 1991 Skins:

Quote

The 1991 Washington Redskins season was the team's 60th in the National Football League (NFL), and its 55th in Washington, D.C.. The Redskins dominated the league all season, winning their first eleven games. Their two losses were by margins of 3 and 2 points, respectively.

The Redskins led the league in scoring with 485 points, and allowed the second-fewest points (224) in the league in 1991.[1] (As of the 1991 season, this was the third-highest total in NFL history; it still ranks in the top 20 all-time.)[2] They had a +18 turnover ratio, also best in the NFL.

Hmmmm.... great offense, great defense, leading the league in turnovers.  Sounds familiar!

Yes, we either win it or we don't win it.

well, of course.  but that doesn't account for the 7-9 games that has to be played before the SB, which drastically brings the % down.

1/2^4 = 1/16 = 6.25%

1/2^3 = 1/8 = 12.5%

So, 50/50 shot at THIS point in the season is even crazier b/c those quick odds I just calculated doesn't account for the remaining regular season games.

This thread doesn't deserve to die so soon :(

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14203319/with-new-england-carolina-sporting-10-0-records-look-previous-nfl-teams-start-10-0-super-bowl-era

here's a fun and interactive link from ESPN. I don't think people are fully appreciating the magnitude of starting 11-0 because the Patriots are also 10-0 and I guess it dilutes the limelight on us but we might as well expect Occupy Mint Street featuring disgruntled Browns and Raiders fans at this point, because we are the ~1%.

we're having a very special year and I only hope that when it's all said and done I'll be able to look back on it knowing the Panthers ended up winning the Super Bowl, because that's the only proper ending I can think of for it.

    • It’ll be interesting to see how the board falls I completely agree with you on TE for us The safety from Oregon would be the cherry on top for Evero’s defense/scheme.  If a OL’men is there that you love it would be very hard to pass up. This fan base seems to just see Walker as a stop gap but I wouldn’t be so sure. He’s the same age as Ekwonu. He’s had a much more impressive career arc/progression than Icky has. He’s the better pass protector. As far as I see it if Walker has a good year I’d bring him back over Icky. Ekwonu isn’t some elite franchise LT. Playing next to Lewis is going to be great for Walker much like it has been for Icky. We definitely need to get younger/cheaper on the OL though so for this reason alone it’s still top of my list come round 1 if board falls this way  Could also use another corner with Mike Jackson’s deal up after this season and needing a nickel but Corey Thornton looked really good in that role in the limited time we got to see him. However he’s coming off an achillies injury and you never know with those.  Then as mentioned above we do still have a need at WR. As far as “weapons” go it’s kind of a 2 man show with Tmac and Coker and neither is a burner. If Jordan Tyson is there at 19 and we can have a young WR group locked up for cheap that’s a huge advantage cap wise  And don’t forget linebacker. That clip in Devin’s Lloyd blueprint they used from Evero saying they need more intelligence there could’ve been left out for Wallace’s sake but it’s true. Wallace is lost in coverage. Pair a smart linebacker with Lloyd and that’s a group with Wallace and Cherelus being depth
    • The fact that this is even a discussion is a testament of the level of front office badassery that's going on.
    • Not always. LT was for the Giants. So was Ray Lewis. Von Miller was moreso than Manning his final year in the season that shall not be named. It's usually the QB, but not always.
