Be Honest, How Many of You Were Cam Fans When He Was At Auburn?

Here's how the Huddle thought of Cam 2 weeks before Draft Day 2011. Also, even though you only see 9 people that pied the first post, that happened after we changed formats here and I was actually pied like 60 times:

Holy fuggin' poo at the vitriolic hate and (yes) not-so-carefully-hidden racism by some of the responders in that post.

I hated the pick to be honest

Yeah, I didn't like it.  It's no disrespect to Cam as I simply wanted to trade down for picks as I felt we needed an overhaul and an influx of talent would help more than a rookie QB at the time.  It was already known to be a good draft class and Arizona was interested in trading.  I was hoping we would move down a few spots and gain an additional high value pick and maybe another pick for the following class.  If that didn't work there were other players I liked lower as well.  Just really wanted to trade and load up on picks really.  After looking at that draft class, they were right about the talent.

Peterson looked pretty amazing to me at the time.  I was dreaming how nice it would be to have him duo with Gamble in the secondary and have Patrick bring our return game to prominence again.  I was relying on of course that if we still sucked we'd be #1 pick next year and get Andrew anyway along with possibly an extra pick from the #1 overall trading.  After all, we soon found out the Falcons made a huge trade for Julio that same year and that was for only 6th place!

I was completely onboard with taking Cam after that 2nd game though.  I wasn't sure how he would turn out but he did one thing that had been missing for a long time.  Cam brought excitement into gameday.  We had friends finally interested once again for our 4th seat.  It was fun to go and see a Panther game all over again.  It's rather funny how it's taken 5 years for the rest of the nation to notice this.

I know it's tough to take this after seeing the hindsight but isn't it rather strange to reflect that we would likely have just had Peterson playing vs. Arizona's Cam?  I still remember Peterson running back a kick against us in his first game.  He should have called fair catch so our players assumed that he did and let him run right on past them for the TD.  That one play was really the difference in Cam's first day on the field.  I'm glad Cam has evened the score.  Now he just needs to do the same with Von.

I always liked Cam and made positive posts about him, but I thought it would take the typical 4 seasons for him to develop into a good QB here. I thought we would have 3 or 4 losing seasons in a row with Cam, and then we would start having winning seasons once he knew what he was doing. I predicted that he would be our franchise QB, and I predicted that he would "destroy opposing defenses with his running and scrambling ability." Fans came back at me on here with "Cam's scrambling and running won't work at the NFL level, that only works in college" ect. Of course it will work in the NFL. Dude is 6' 5" and blazing fast, but say that on the huddle back then and you would catch hell. Now by the time we were 2 weeks out from the draft the huddle had made a major shift. Cam had become much more popular, and it was pretty clear we were taking him.

The further you roll back the clock, the worse the opinions of Cam were here. It was so bad that many fans thought Cam would be another JaMarcus Russell bust, and wanted us to trade down or take damn near anyone else. Bring in a free agent QB. Anything. Someone suggested Gabbert and I flew into a rant about how Chase Daniel was a better QB. Those were actually really fun times.

I was rooting against him.  Not something against him personally, but I was so sick of college football for awhile there.  It seemed like every year was Ohio State, Texas, or Notre Dame losing to some SEC school.  It was boring as hell and there was nobody to root for.  The year UNC did not go to a bowl it had reached a point where I was so bored that I did not watch a single bowl game and only watched maybe CFB games all season.

As for the draft, I was hoping for Luck.  When he stayed I was rooting for Patrick Peterson.  I thought Cam was a top ten pick, but did not want to spend the #1 on him.  Looking back I am not sure I was really aware of the difference with the new rookie wage scale.  I saw the absurd contract Bradford and others got and wanted no part of giving that to a guy with only one year of experience.

I wasn't pulling for Luck (I didn't like him much for some reason ... still don't), but I wasn't a Cam fan either when we got him. I believe he has matured, both as a player and as a person, and has redeemed himself in many ways. I always have believed in redemption for those who work on their issues and try to change for the better. He has done that.

I wasn't a Cam fan then, but mostly because he beat my Clemson team in September that year. He was so much fun to watch and paid it off by blowing out the coots in the SEC title game.

I didn't know if he'd be a good NFL quarterback. I'll gladly eat a huge plate of crow, he's been better than I ever imagined.
