Pre Free-Agency NFL News

Vaughn McClure of ESPN reports that the Falcons have inquired about Browns free agent WR Travis Benjamin.

In 2015, Benjamin appeared in all 16 games and recorded 68 receptions for 966 yards receiving and five touchdowns. Benjamin has also contributed 324 punt return yards and a touchdown

Albert Breer of NFL Media reports that Bengals free agent WR Marvin Jones is drawing interest from the Browns, Titans, and Falcons.

Earlier in the day, Breer mentions that the Bengals were interested in keeping Jones, but it could be tough, given the number of free agents Cincinnati has to deal with.
In 2015, Jones appeared in all 16 games and recorded 65 receptions for 816 yards receiving and four touchdowns.

These are the moves that I don't understand how we sit idly by while they are happening.

I understand big spenders typically are failures, and i don't think we need to spend big.  But, look at the Broncos...  if you have a need and a difference maker is out there, then you go get them, like they did with Sanders, Talib, Ware, etc.

No, we shouldnt be trying to make big splashes, but you can spend responsibly without having to dig through thr bargain bin.  Another reason FA big spenders dont usually translate to success is because those teams have so many holes to begin with...  we don't, we only have a few, but i wish we'd show some more activity in patching them up.

Who says Carolina was 'sitting idly by'? People make the assumptions that no news = zero action by the team, that any player who signs elsewhere was not contacted by Carolina in any way, that every player wants to come to Carolina, and/or that the FO feels that every player is a good fit for the team but simply chooses not to pursue them... Any/all of those are baseless assumptions in almost all situations.

I'm assuming based off what is reported.  Usually even after a FA signs, it is reported what teams were interested.  I'm also operating under the assumption of the blueprint that Gettleman has laid out in the past few seasons.  He has generally let the market shape itself while letting the first tier guys clear out of the way before getting heavily active.  That is what he has done and that's what many of us expect him to do now.

I'm not taking a shot at him.  I believe in Gettleman and he has made the decisions necessary to make us consecutive three-time division champs.  All i'm saying is that when you see guys at positions of need signing reasonable contracts elsewhere, it would be nice to KNOW we were at least in pursuit.

Obviously, we don't know a lot of things...  maybe he wasn't considered a fit for out system.  Maybe we did contact him?  Maybe we weren't willing to pay even that much?  Maybe he wasn't interested?  Regardless, i'm just operating on what information we do know and Gettleman's past routine when it comes to FA.

I trust him to make the right decisions, but i do think for a team that came so close to winning it all, we should be willing to put up a little more money than usual to attract higher quality players to finish the job this time, much like Denver did after being embarrassed by Seattle.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing multiple league sources, reports that the Seahawks have accepted that free agent OLB Bruce Irvin will be signing elsewhere.

Even though Irvin had said that he’s be willing to return to Seattle if the money was close, Florio mentions that this won’t be case.

The guy who chirped to the Seattle paper that he will be in Atlanta in 2016 isn't re-signing? Inconceivable.

Not a devastating loss, was watching him as a Gettleman special. 5'10", 185 lbs., 30 years old, 9th year vet that signed with the Iggles to re-unite with former Bills coach Jim Schwartz, the new Iggles DC.

Over 500 players changed teams in last years offseason. Plenty of time, especially for a CB. More of those floating around than any other position

Bill Williamson mentions that the Raiders are the team to keep an eye on for Rams free agent CB Janoris Jenkins.

Oakland has already had huge day, agreeing to contracts with OL Kelechi Osemele and LB Bruce Irvin. However, it appears as though more big deals could be coming for the Raiders. They spending that $$$$

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Jaguars are expected to sign Jets free agent RB Chris Ivory to a contract at the start of free agency.deal that's believed to be well above $6M per year.

The #Jaguars are releasing RB Toby Gerhart tomorrow, source said. Makes sense with the Chris Ivory signing

Tom Withers of the Associated Press writes that the Browns are expected to release QB Johnny Manziel as early as Wednesday.

Dolphins
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that Rams DE William Hayes remains a top target for the Dolphins.

According to Jackson, the Dolphins would like to find an upgrade to LB Jelani Jenkins if they can, and have interest in Bengals LB Vincent Rey, among others.

Jackson adds that Miami has shown interest in re-signing DT C.J. Mosley.
If the Dolphins lose RB Lamar Miller, Jackson expects them to consider signing a reasonably priced running back such as Bilal Powell, Ronnie Hillman, and maybe Matt Forte.

Other running back options, according to Jackson, include restricted free agent C.J. Anderson and Alfred Morris.
